Set in an idyllic vision of a southern Italian village square, Donizetti's delightful opera tells a tale of romantic rivalry.

The penniless Nemorino and the bumptious Sergeant Belcore are competiting for the love of Adina - a girl both beautiful and bookish. Adina's reading of the classic tale of Tristan and Isolde gives poor love-sick Nemorino an idea. He thinks that the wonder-working Dr Dulcamara might have just the potion his heart requires. Witty, charming and ultimately deeply touching, L'Elisir D'Amore is Italian opera at its intoxicating best. The score bubbles over with high spirits, the action is genuinely funny and though, as in all the best comedies, the laughter is occasionally tinged with tears, true love eventually wins the day - all thanks to a bottle or two of Bordeaux. Acclaimed British tenor Peter Auty returns to the role of Nemorino, while Russian soprano Ekaterina Siurina makes her Glyndebourne debut as Adina. Cast and crew subject to change.

Revolution is in the air in David McVicar's wonderfully illuminating production of Le nozze di Figaro (The Marriage of Figaro).

Count Almaviva's attempts to bed Susanna, his manservant Figaro's girl, are repeatedly thwarted by those around him - including this own wife, the Countess. Mozart's music makes this one of the finest jewels in the opera repertory, with a wealth of famous melodies that start from the familiar first notes of the energetic Overture. There is Cherubino's breathless infatuation in Non so piu cosa son and the playfulness of Figaro in Non piu andrai as he sends him off to war, but there is also the genuine despair of the Countess at her husband's infidelity, revealed in Porgi, amor and Dove sono. All shades of emotion are portrayed through the solos, duets and ensembles with this stellar cast of singers bringing Mozart's masterpiece to full dramatic life. Cast and crew subject to change.

The Royal Opera: Fille Du Regiment

    Release date: 9 May 2010

    Director: Gaetano Donizetti

Starring: Natalie Dessay, Juan Diego Florez

As a baby, the beautiful Marie was found on a battlefield and adopted, not by one soldier, but by an entire regiment. View more

As a baby, the beautiful Marie was found on a battlefield and adopted, not by one soldier, but by an entire regiment.

When she falls - quite literally - into the arms of Tonio, her military fathers are not keen to sanction the marriage. And why is the Marquise de Berkenfeld so suspiciously keen to make a high-society match of her own for Marie? The fun of this exuberant comedy is in the dramatic twists and the tuneful music en-route to the happy ending. With Laurent Pelley's striking and inventive set designs, this production was firmly on the Season's operatic map. With an international reputation for his fresh and exuberant touch with French comedy, Pelly directed a new staging for The Royal Opera of Donizetti's first opera for Paris. La Fille du regiment is a musical delight and a showcase for thrilling vocal virtuosity with Natalie Dessay and Juan Diego Florez igniting the vocal fireworks. Cast and crew subject to change.
