Avengers: Endgame crumbles UK box office records

Marvel's Avengers: Endgame is tearing through box office records quicker than Tony Stark deploys puns. Here's how it breaks down:

  • Screen Daily reports that the movie has opened to a mighty £43.4 million in the UK – that's the biggest box office opening of all time on these shores. (Bear in mind, this ranges from midnight on Thursday to Sunday.)
  • The movie has left previous record holder, James Bond adventure Spectre, in the dust. The Daniel Craig movie opened in October 2015 to £41.3m – this encompassed four days of previews (Monday to Thursday, when it took £21.3m) and then the three-day opening weekend (£20m). Endgame has waltzed past that in just four days.
  • Endgame's Friday to Sunday opening weekend of £31.4m also beats the previous record of £24.3m, posted by Star Wars: The Force Awakens in December 2015.
  • The film also posted the biggest UK opening day of all time with £11.9m, the single biggest day (Saturday April 27th, with £12.1m) and the biggest Sunday of all time (£10.2m).
  • Endgame also topped the April 2018 box office of predecessor Avengers: Infinity War, which grossed £23.1m in the span of Friday to Sunday, and a total of £29.4m when including the Thursday.

The film's UK share is part of the movie's colossal global opening weekend – $1.2 billion in total, to be precise. Will Endgame top Avatar ($2.7 billion) to become the most successful movie of all time? We'll find out in the coming weeks.
