When is a superhero movie also a horror movie? And when does a terrifying chiller also masquerade as a twisted inversion of comic book conventions? The answer in both cases is Brightburn, the gory and gripping new story of one boy's super-powered alter-ego that mutates into something evil.
Newcomer Jackson A. Dunn plays the apparently cherubic kid who is in fact an alien from another planet. He's been raised in the small Kansas town of Brightburn by two loving human parents, but as he advances into adolescence he finds his true destiny resides in carnage, and the destruction of those who consider him an outsider. Imagine Superman's Kentucky childhood by way of Michael Myers and you get the picture.
The movie recently terrified Cineworld Unlimited viewers at our preview screening and goes on wide release on 21st June. Check out this behind the scenes video in which producer James Gunn and star Elizabeth Banks (both of whom collaborated on Gunn's 2006 movie Slither) discuss nothing less than the birth of a new genre.
