Who says Christmas has to end after 25th December? No doubt many of you are already looking ahead to the post-turkey, post-present paradise of Boxing Day – and that's where we come in.

1. The Grinch
Dr. Seuss' diabolically entertaining, Christmas-hating grump gets a slick CGI makeover from the team behind The Secret Life of Pets. Benedict Cumberbatch voices the hermit-like grinch on a mission to destroy Christmas in a sweet and salty festive treat.

2. Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2
John C. Reilly's arcade game baddie is back and headed for the wilds of the internet in this inventive and funny Disney sequel. Even so, it's the moment where plucky racer Vanellope von Schweetz (Sarah Silverman) meets the Disney princesses that steals the show.

3. Aquaman
Comic book fans are in for a treat this Yuletide as DC's sardonic Aquaman gets his eagerly anticipated solo adventure. Jason Momoa steps up to leading man status following his ensemble appearance in Justice League, bringing brawny muscle and wry charm to the role of the half-human, half-Atlantean Arthur Curry.
The Conjuring and Insidious filmmaker James Wan fashions a luscious underwater world and the supporting cast brims with famous faces, including Nicole Kidman, Willem Dafoe, Patrick Wilson and Dolph Lundgren.

4. Mary Poppins Returns
It's not easy stepping into the shoes of Julie Andrews, but the peerless, Golden Globe-nominated Emily Blunt makes it seem effortless in this long-awaited (and that's understating it) Disney sequel.
The legacy of Disney's 1964 masterpiece Mary Poppins is honoured and celebrated in this sparkling follow-up, as the all-singing, all-dancing Blunt joins a terrific cast (Lin-Manuel Miranda, Ben Whishaw, Emily Mortimer, Colin Firth) for a practically perfect moviegoing experience. 5. Bumblebee
Those who've been desiring a Transformers movie with a little more human focus and heart have their prayers answered in this thrilling origin story.
Director Michael Bay gives way to Kubo and the Two Strings helmer Travis Knight for an 80s-set tale of one young woman's bond with the eponymous Autobot, a movie that channels all manner of nostalgic classics like E.T. and Short Circuit. And with stars Hailee Steinfeld and John Cena on winning form, this is a movie with laughs and charm to spare.

6. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
It's time to rethink everything you thought you knew about Spider-Man. This visually exuberant and brilliantly knowing animated spin-off snares us in its web, introducing us to a host of Spider-Man 'alternates' from multiple Spidey universes.
Under the auspices of LEGO Movie architects Phil Lord and Chris Miller, this is our amusing, heartfelt and brilliantly clever introduction to mixed race Spider-Man Miles Morales (Shameik Moore). Diversifying and expanding the texture and character of Sony's expanding Spider-Man universe, every frame is crammed with visual invention and sly gags.

7. Mortal Engines
Looking for an alternative to sequels and comic book adaptations? Allow Lord of the Rings filmmaker Peter Jackson to sweep you into a post-apocalyptic world in which entire cities patrol the landscape on moving platforms, consuming smaller towns as they do so.
Adapted from the first novel in author Philip Reeve's popular book series, the film sees Jackson (who produces) collaborate with his Rings screenwriting partners Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, while visual effects artist Christian Rivers makes his directorial debut.

8. Holmes & Watson
It's not all about superheroes, magical nannies and huge explosions this Christmas season. If your funny bone is desiring to be tickled, we've got the latest comic collaboration between stars Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly – their first, in fact, since the brilliantly funny Step Brothers back in 2008.
