The new year is upon us, and 2019 is set to bring with it an onslaught of exciting blockbusters.
Chief among them is a brand new Hellboy movie, starring Stranger Things' David Harbour as the eponymous comic book character. Here's everything we know so far about the movie, plus an introduction to the fiery, horned anti-hero for newcomers.
What is the story of the Hellboy reboot?
The new Hellboy movie is based on the Dark Horse Comics character of the same name. Created by Mike Mignola, he's a demon, a wisecracking creature born of hell and raised by humankind, which means he suffers something of an identity crisis. The film is set to follow Hellboy as he works to stop an ancient medieval sorceress from destroying all of mankind.
Directed by Neil Marshall, whose terrific 2005 British chiller The Descent still terrifies us, the film is said to be an R-rated reboot of the original release, with mature themes resulting in the subsequent change. The film draws inspiration from three existing Hellboy comics, entitled Darkness falls, The Wild Hunt and The Storm and the Fury.
Earlier this year, IT and Blade Runner 2049's Benjamin Wallfisch was announced as the film's composer – another sure sign that this is set to strike a more brooding tone than the earlier versions.
Say again? Yes, it may have slipped your mind that we've already had two Hellboy films not so long ago…
Who starred as Hellboy previously?
The new Hellboy movie is in fact a reboot of the existing Hellboy film series, both of which were directed by The Shape of Water's Guillermo del Toro. The original adaptation was released in 2004, and starred Ron Perlman in the title role – he's a Del Toro favourite having appeared in Cronos and Blade 2.
With a starry supporting cast including Selma Blair (Cruel Intentions) and the late John Hurt (1984), this release acted as our big screen introduction to the character and the B.P.R.D. (Bureau for Paranormal Research and Development). Del Toro regular Doug Jones, who played the aquatic man in The Shape of Water, also made a scene-stealing appearance as Hellboy's best buddy Abe Sapien. The movie was received favourably by critics, and an equally successful sequel followed in 2008.
Said sequel Hellboy II: The Golden Army includes many of the same characters, and shows Hellboy revealing himself to the outside world. Following the release, a third film entitled Hellboy III was in development, with Guillermo del Toro intended to return as director and writer.
However, after the writers (creator Mike Mignola and Andrew Cosby) offered del Toro a producer credit as opposed to director, both he and Perlman withdrew from the film.
In 2017, Mignola officially announced the sequel, then intended for a 2018 release. Fast forward to 2019, and we're finally getting a revamped version of Hellboy.
Who stars in the new Hellboy movie?
David Harbour as Hellboy / Anung Un Rama – a demon who works for the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense (B.P.R.D). Harbour is best known for his role in popular Netflix series Stranger Things, as Sheriff Jim Hopper.
Milla Jovovich as Nimue: The Blood Queen – a medieval sorceress who is intent on destroying all humans. Jovovich shot to international fame in The Fifth Element and the Resident Evil franchise, which has spawned six movies to date. (And a reboot of that series is also said to be on the cards.)
Ian McShane as Professor Trevor Bruttenholm – founder of the B.P.R.D and Hellboy's adoptive father. McShane is largely known for his television roles including antique dealer series Lovejoy (he also turned up in Game of Thrones), but has also appeared in numerous high-profile blockbusters including John Wick.
Sasha Lane as Alice Monaghan – a woman who was kidnapped by fairies as a child, and has since retained some of her magical abilities. Lane made her film debut as Star in 2016's American Honey, a critically acclaimed road trip drama directed by Andrea Arnold.
Daniel Dae Kim as Ben Daimio – a military member of the B.P.R.D who has the ability to turn into a jaguar when in pain. Kim previously starred in the Divergent series, and also runs a production company named 3AD.
When is the new Hellboy movie released?
In October 2018 a panel for the film was held at New York Comic Con, where attendees were treated to the first glimpse of footage. This has yet to be officially released, but the positive reactions from the audience have prepared us to expect great things.
With a brand new and popular actor in the role of Hellboy, plus an exciting British director promising a fresh tone that will amplify the horror of Hellboy's origins, expectations for this release are already high. We are confident they won't let us down.
