Fantastic Beasts 3: Dan Fogler teases a "massive war"

Although its production has been temporarily halted by the coronavirus pandemic, Fantastic Beasts 3 is still on the cards, ready to cast a spell with its third dose of J.K. Rowling magic.

The film picks up from 2016's Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them, and 2018's Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, both written by Rowling. The former movie introduced us to magizoologist Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne), essentially a magical David Attenborough. And the latter deepened and darkened his conflict with raging wizard Grindelwald (Johnny Depp), who wants to assure his supremacy over the human race.

Both films are set in the early 20th century and anticipate the later Harry Potter films. (Newt's eponymous textbook is glimpsed within the halls of Hogwarts.) Of course, Newt isn't facing Grindelwald alone: he has an assortment of muggle, or, if you're American, no-maj, sidekicks ready to do battle. One of them is Jacob, played by Dan Fogler, and the actor has been talking up Rowling's latest script.

"I can say I read the script and the character development is really lovely and it’s very similar to the feel of the first movie, which I think is great," Fogler told Syfy Wire. "It’s leading toward this massive war with the backdrop of World War II, so you can just imagine epic battle scenes are coming."

The spectre of war was invoked at the end of the most recent movie, when Grindelwald offered a chilling portent of mankind's destructive capabilities. And Fogler remains optimistic that production will get back on track before long.

"We’re just waiting," he said. "I guess when everybody else starts back up, when the mechanism starts to move again and everybody starts to get back to work, that’s when we’ll get back to work. Hopefully, sooner than later."

Directed, as before, by David Yates, Fantastic Beasts 3 has been scheduled for a 2021 release, although this could change. Let us know @Cineworld if you're ready to be reunited with Newt, Jacob and the gang.
