Frozen 2 on course to be one of 2019's biggest movies

screen-poster

Frozen 2 served up a Thanksgiving treat in the USA over the weekend, topping $287 million in domestic figures. According to Box Office Mojo, the Disney sequel's global total now stands at $738 million after just 12 days on release, which may indicate it has its blockbusting predecessor in sight.

Released in 2013, the first Frozen went on to gross $1.27 billion globally, becoming the most successful Disney animation ever at the time. Given Frozen 2's runaway success, it's highly likely it will at least equal the impact of the first film, and it's guaranteed to be up there with 2019's biggest movies.

Forbes reports that Frozen 2 smashed Thanksgiving weekend records. It remains to be seen where the movie will rank in this year's most successful blockbusters, currently topped by Avengers: Endgame ($2.797 billion), which is now the highest-grossing movie of all time.

Also ranking highly: Spider-Man: Far From Home, which with its final gross of $1.131 billion, makes it Sony Pictures' most successful film to date. Above that is Disney's very own The Lion King, currently the most lucrative animated movie ever (if you define it as such) with takings of $1.655 billion.

Frozen 2 is already well placed to overtake Hobbs & Shaw ($758 million globally), and will be looking to catch Joker, the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time ($1.048 billion), and Disney remake Aladdin ($1.050 million).
