Principal photography has commenced on the new Ghostbusters movie, and this time the franchise is keeping it in the family. Oscar-nominated director of Juno and Tully, Jason Reitman, follows in the footsteps of his father Ivan, who directed the initial two instalments in 1984 and 1989 before Bridesmaids' Paul Feig undertook a controversial reboot in 2016.
The news was announced via Jason Reitman's Twitter with a shot of several new cast members, including Stranger Things' Finn Wolfhard, Gone Girl's Carrie Coon and Captain Marvel's McKenna Grace. They're joined by Jason's father (and producer) Ivan himself.
The third Ghostbusters movie owes no allegiances to Feig's take on the material, which starred the likes of Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig. Instead, this purports to be a continuation of the original series mythology, although specific plot details are being kept under wraps.
As Reitman's Twitter caption makes clear, his father's heritage is clearly the most important thing here, and the reveal earlier this year of the classic Ecto-1 station wagon in the teaser trailer further emphasised the sense of nostalgia. (The casting of Wolfhard, star of eighties-riffing Stranger Things and the IT movies, only heightens the feeling.)
It was recently confirmed that Ant-Man himself, Paul Rudd, will be featuring in a key role as a high-school principal. Familiar faces Sigourney Weaver and Annie Potts, recently heard as Bo Peep in Toy Story 4, are mooted to be returning, as are Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson.
Given the suburban nature of the set photo, are we to imagine this is a new household being plagued by spirits? In which case, who are the Ghostbusters being drafted in to save them? Or maybe the characters played by Wolfhard and Grace are the heirs apparent to the Ghostbusters mantle?
Hopefully we'll get some answers before cats and dogs start living together and mass hysteria reigns. Ghostbusters 3 is due for release on 10th July 2020, so let us know @Cineworld if you think this will be a proud continuation of the saga.
