It’s difficult to just pick five times Martin Freeman made us fall for him, but here goes...
Tim (The Office)
It started all those years ago when he was working at a paper company in the TV’s The Office, acting pretty much everyone else off the screen using just his facial expressions. Few people can raise their eyebrows with as much meaning. All the way through the show, Tim was the voice of reason who always had our sympathy, but it was the Christmas Special that made all our hearts burst.
Far from elementary (sorry), his depiction of John Watson in the BBC’s Sherlock made him more than just the foil to the detective’s genius. He has had many fine moments, most of them when he and co-star Benedict Cumberbatch are bickering like a married couple. The moustache episode is one of our favourites, which illustrates his deep but reluctant respect for Sherlock, and sparked the production of a new line of “I don’t shave for Sherlock” t-shirts.
Bilbo Baggins (The Hobbit)
We can’t think of anyone else we’d rather return to The Shire with. When Bilbo sets off on his adventure he embodies all the excitement and childhood glee that we all wish we still had.
Lester Nygaard (Fargo)
Nobody saw it coming when Tim from The Office took on the role of an unhinged Midwesterner in the TV adaptation of Fargo and we all made this surprised face. But he was perfect as the downtrodden Lester who gets tangled up in murder and mayhem.
John (Love Actually)
The most British of British performances – talking about the traffic while acting as the stand-in for a movie's sex scene. Keeping it real and bringing us back down to Earth is one of the many reasons we love him.
