News! Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle sequel will release in 2019

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle turned out to be one of 2017's most delightful surprises. Honouring the legacy of the beloved 1995 Robin Williams original, while coaxing excellent chemistry from stars Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart and Karen Gillan, it was a funny, stirring adventure.

So let's rejoice, because we're getting a Jumanji sequel in December 2019, as confirmed by Johnson on his Instagram account. The Rampage star also acknowledged the movie's runaway box office success: with more than $900m in the bank, globally speaking, it's one of distributor Sony's biggest releases of all time.

In fact, it's second only to James Bond movie Skyfall, which grossed a whopping $1.1bn worldwide. In domestic terms, it's the studio's most successful release ever, with takings of more than $400m.

"You guys officially made Jumanji Sony’s biggest domestic movie ever. Ever!" Johnson raved. "Beating Spider-Man and 007 and all these awesome movies over the decades. It’s incredible – never in all my wildest of wild dreams did I think Jumanji would be in the billion dollar conversation."

Although official casting and script details are yet to be confirmed, we can expect all the original players to return and hopefully deliver more of the same hilarious body swap comedy as before.

What's more, it will release in the same time period as Star Wars: Episode 9, so heads up: be sure to clear plenty of space in your movie calendar. More details as we get them.
