Mike Flanagan is already talking to Stephen King about their next movie

Stephen King adaptation Doctor Sleep has been positively received, not least by the author himself. The movie, directed by Mike Flanagan, bridges the gap between King's 2013 novel of the same name and classic 1980 horror The Shining, adapted by Stanley Kubrick from the writer's 1977 book.

King famously hated what Kubrick did with his source material, making Flanagan's achievement with Doctor Sleep all the more admirable. In the eyes of many, he's achieved the impossible, honouring the themes of the original book of The Shining while also paying lip service to Kubrick's discombobulating visuals and sound design.

Little wonder that a delighted King has already met with Flanagan to discuss their next adaptation. Flanagan, who also adapted the author's story Gerald's Game for Netflix, says another project may well be on the cards.

"[Stephen King and I] are talking actively about what's next," he told Cinemablend, "and we have a great idea for that I'm not allowed to talk about yet, but it's really cool, and yeah, I expect there will be another chance to play in that sandbox very soon."

The director also says that Doctor Sleep was the culmination of a long-held ambition. "It's been my dream since I was a kid to be able to adapt Stephen King, and he's let me play in that sandbox two times; I would be thrilled to do it again. He's been happy both times... As long as that keeps up, if he'll have me back, I'm there for the long haul. I'll do as many as he'll let me."
