Tom Cruise feels the need for speed in Top Gun: Maverick trailer

It's high time you fired up that Berlin greatest hits CD, because Tom Cruise is back in the Top Gun: Maverick trailer. Cruise himself made a surprise appearance at Comic-Con's fabled Hall H, delighting the crowds with the first look at the Top Gun sequel, plus a brand new poster.

Cruise returns to the territory of one of his greatest triumphs – the testosterone-fuelled fighter pilot movie, directed by Tony Scott and released in 1985, catapulted the actor to global stardom.

With his Aviator shades and beaming megawatt smile, the role of cocky yet likeable Maverick cemented Cruise's screen persona. However, he's now older and on the other side of the cadet spectrum, teaching young upstarts about that all-important need for speed.

Not that we get much plot in the trailer – instead, we get a slow-burn countdown to Maverick's long-awaited reveal, as he (off-camera) receives a dressing down from Ed Harris's gruff commanding officer.

It's heavy on the nostalgia – that shot of Maverick on his bike racing alongside the jet is more than enough to get the adrenaline pumping. The film is directed by Joseph Kosinski who worked with Cruise on 2013 sci-fi movie Oblivion, and co-stars Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly and Jennifer Connelly. It's co-written by another Cruise favourite: Mission: Impossible - Fallout's Christopher McQuarrie.

Valuable links to the past come in the form of Val Kilmer, who reprises his role as Maverick's one-time rival Ice Man, producer Jerry Bruckheimer and composer Harold Faltermeyer, who wrote the score for the original (he's set to collaborate with Hans Zimmer).
