The Iceman returneth! Val Kilmer confirmed to appear in Top Gun: Maverick

Last week, we reported that filming had officially begun on Top Gun: Maverick. The sequel to 1986 classic Top Gun sees Tom Cruise return to the role of cocky fighter pilot Maverick, and is directed by Cruise's Oblivion collaborator Joseph Kosinski. Here's the first pic tweeted by the star from the set – are you feeling like you want to don Aviator shades yet?

It's also been confirmed that another key actor from the first movie will be back. Val Kilmer, who played Cruise's on-screen rival Iceman, will be taking to the skies again, according to The Wrap.

The original Top Gun saw Maverick and Iceman at each other's throats for the duration, before they finally warmed to each during the impossibly manly finale. Altogether now: "You can be my wingman anytime."

Plot details about the sequel are thin on the ground, although the implication is the older Maverick will be schooling a new generation of hotshot cadets. Might we see Iceman joining him in a fellow mentor role?

Kilmer had originally teased on Facebook in November 2015 that he was "offered ‪#‎topgun2‬ — not often you get to say ‘yes’ without reading the script…" However, he later retracted the statement, saying in a new post: "This is a long way off so calm down. This has been talked about for a long long time and being offered a role is very different from doing a role. I jumped the gun with my post. I jumped the topgun… An innocent mistake. It was just such a wonderful phone call with my agent…"

Well, it seems he's now 100% confirmed to return to the danger zone, and that's where we'll all venturing when Top Gun: Maverick lifts off on 12th July 2019.

In the meantime, catch The Cruiser in Mission: Impossible – Fallout, released on 27th July.
