Godzilla: King of the Monsters is released next year and is the next chapter in the ongoing Warner Bros 'Monsterverse'.
We're talking about the studio's expanding monster movie saga that began with 2014's Godzilla and continued with 2017's Kong: Skull Island. But before we get the title fight between those two headliners (Godzilla vs. Kong is released in 2020), King of the Monsters is the pivotal franchise stepping stone that's set to blow us out of our seats.
The iconic giant lizard is back to fight some equally famous monsters from Godzilla lore. These include the flying Mothra and three-headed beastie King Ghidorah, both of which have been mainstays throughout the Japanese Godzilla franchise. Here's the atmospheric new poster.
As if that didn't make it clear enough, the scale of this new 'Monsterverse' movie promises to be above and beyond its predecessors. Directed by Krampus filmmaker Michael Dougherty, Godzilla II: King of the Monsters reunites us with mysterious government agency Monarch as they're drawn into a battle between several mythical creatures. The fate of the world hangs in the balance as the outcome of the battle between Godzilla and his enemies remains unclear.
Stranger Things' Millie Bobby Brown leads a starry ensemble cast that also includes The Conjuring's Vera Farmiga, Super 8's Kyle Chandler, Game of Thrones' Charles Dance, Get Out's Bradley Whitford and the returning Godzilla duo of Sally Hawkins and Ken Watanabe.
