Your guide to the all-star cast of characters in Godzilla: King of the Monsters

We've already met the gargantuan, legendary kaiju (Japanese for 'strange beast') getting ready to battle it out in Godzilla: King of the Monsters. But what about the people down below trying to make sense of a world where multiple Titans roam?

The first two instalments in the Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures MonsterVerse have drawn in some big names. Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Bryon Cranston, Elizabeth Olsen and Juliette Binoche headed up the cast of 2014's Godzilla, while we saw Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson and Brie Larson in 2017's Kong: Skull Island.

Ken Watanabe and Sally Hawkins are reprising their Godzilla roles as scientific duo Dr. Ishiro Serizawa and Dr Vivienne Graham. Plus, we've already met monster catching agency Monarch as a whole. But Brody family are out of the Godzilla picture, replaced by a number of new characters.

Millie Bobby Brown as Madison Russell

As feature film debuts go, this is a big one for the Stranger Things star. King of the Monsters appears to centre around the three-person Russell family, with trailers showing Madison getting up close and personal with several of the film's terrifying Titans. That might have something to do with her parents and their work…

Vera Farmiga as Dr Emma Russell

We think Dr Russell has developed a method of communicating with - and maybe even controlling - Titans. In the final trailer we see both Dr Russell and Madison bonding with the striking, insect-like kaiju Mothra. Mother and daughter are both kidnapped by a mysterious organisation (headed by Charles Dance) that have less-than-friendly plans for the beasts.

Farmiga is an extremely talented actress, with roles in The Departed, Bates Motel, Boy in the Striped Pyjamas and many more.

Kyle Chandler as Mark Russell

The final member of the small Russell clan is dad Mark, who is brought on board to try and track down his kidnapped family. You will have seen Chandler in tonnes of films over the years, and he's no stranger to monsters and action. He actually appeared in Peter Jackson's King Kong, and has also starred in Argo and Friday Night Lights.

Charles Dance as Jonah Alan

If shots of unbelievable creatures duking it out don't give you chills, Charles Dance's dulcet tones will. It's his mercenary organisation that takes Madison and Emma Russell captive.

Previous speculation had Dance embodying an older version of Captain James Conrad from Kong: Skull Island. Played by Tom Hiddleston, the younger Conrad survived the film to then actually be recruited into Monarch alongside Brie Larson's Mason Weaver after the credits. This idea has been bouncing around since initial rumours of his casting. If anyone is going to play a character who ends up being more than he seems, it's Charles Dance.

Ziyi Zhang as Dr Ilene Chen

Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Memoirs of a Geisha, Rush Hour, House of Flying Daggers… International superstar Ziyi Zhang is stepping into the MonsterVerse. Her character Dr Chen plays a key role in Monarch, and is expected to return in 2020's Godzilla vs Kong.
