1. The First Omen (released April 5th)
In 1976, horror classic The Omen introduced us to Damien, the Antichrist and the spawn of Satan himself. The film's box office success led to a full-blown franchise and a 2006 remake. Now, prequel movie The First Omen sheds light on the shadowy circumstances surrounding Damien's birth.
Set in 1971, the plot follows an American woman sent to work at a church in Rome who uncovers a sinister conspiracy to bring about the arrival of the Antichrist. Britain's finest Bill Nighy stars as does Servant actor Nell Tiger Free.
2. Monkey Man (released April 5th)
Dev Patel ascends to the role of action director in this hard-hitting revenge thriller that has already won over the critics at the SXSW Film Festival. In his feature directorial debut, Patel helms, writes, produces and stars as Kid, a young orphan and underground boxer seeking revenge on those who slaughtered his family.
Monkey Man is adorned with references to Hindu culture including Kid's boxing get-up: as implied by the title, he disguises himself as Hanuman the Monkey God. But this is just one of the myriad cultural nuances on display amidst the ferocious action sequences, which have seen the film dubbed as John Wick in Mumbai.
3. Back to Black (released April 12th)
Actor Marisa Abela transforms into the pioneering, ill-fated singer Amy Winehouse in this biographical drama. Winehouse's tragically curtailed life was distinguished by her meteoric success and singular vocal range before she was undermined by those closest to her.
Fifty Shades of Grey director Sam Taylor-Johnson promises to lift the lid on Winehouse's wife as Abela does her own singing. The cast is excellent: Jack O'Connell portrays Blake Fielder-Civil, Eddie Marsan portrays Mitch Winehouse and Lesley Manville is Cynthia Winehouse.
4. Civil War (released April 12th)
Author turned screenwriter and director Alex Garland is no stranger to challenging subject matter. The Ex-Machina filmmaker now turns his attention to disruptive American politics, which is set to be all the more fiery what with Civil War's release during the 2024 American election year.
Civil War dramatises a divided American landscape as conflict rages between the American government and the separatist 'Western Forces' led by Texas and California. Kirsten Dunst leads the cast as the photojournalist on the ground who chronicles this once-great nation's collapse from the inside.
5. Abigail (released April 19th)
Scream filmmakers Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett helm this gleefully gory vampire movie. When a gang of crooks kidnaps a young girl and holds her to ransom, they cannot imagine the bloody horror that ensues.
It turns out their quarry is not human at all but a fierce bloodsucker – and she's hungry. The directors have promised full-on carnage as the cast, including Matilda star Alisha Weir and Scream's very own Melissa Barrera, sink their teeth into the material.
6. The Book of Clarence (released April 19th)
This wry Biblical comedy-drama follows a struggling down-on-his-luck man named Clarence living in A.D. 33 Jerusalem. Desperate for fame, Clarence looks to capitalize on the rise of Jesus Christ, by claiming to be a new Messiah sent by God, in an attempt to free himself of debt and start a life of glory for himself.
Following his reinvention of the Western with The Harder They Fall, writer-director Jeymes Samuel now presents us with a perceptive alternate take on the New Testament. The strong cast is led by LaKeith Stanfield with RJ Cyler, Alfre Woodard, James McAvoy and Benedict Cumberbatch lending support.
7. Challengers (released April 26th)
The term 'mixed doubles' takes on a new meaning in this steamy psychological drama, in which the actions on the tennis court are topped by those taking place off it.
Dune star Zendaya collaborates with Call Me By Your Name director Luca Guadagnino for the story of a Grand Slam tennis champion who signs up to compete in a challenger event against the former lover of his wife and coach. Josh O'Connor and Mike Faist complete the film's complex relationship triage.
