Disney-Pixar announces its new movie Luca

In need of cheering up? We all want that at the moment. Fortunately, those wonderful animators at Disney-Pixar have stepped forward with news of their next project.

The film is called Luca, and is billing itself as a coming-of-age story about a young boy's life on the Italian Riviera. Already, the mind boggles at the potential for lushly beautiful animation and emotionally resonant themes. The feature will come from Enrico Casarosa, who helmed the delightful short film La Luna, which preceded Scottish adventure Brave.

The official synopsis is as follows: 'Set in a beautiful seaside town on the Italian Riviera, the original animated feature is a coming-of-age story about one young boy experiencing an unforgettable summer filled with gelato, pasta and endless scooter rides. Luca shares these adventures with his newfound best friend, but all the fun is threatened by a deeply-held secret: he is a sea monster from another world just below the water’s surface.'

“This is a deeply personal story for me," says Casarosa, "not only because it’s set on the Italian Riviera where I grew up, but because at the core of this film is a celebration of friendship. Childhood friendships often set the course of who we want to become and it is those bonds that are at the heart of our story in Luca. So in addition to the beauty and charm of the Italian seaside, our film will feature an unforgettable summer adventure that will fundamentally change Luca.”

It sounds like we need to brace ourselves for another emotional rollercoaster from the masters of such things. Luca is scheduled for release in the UK on 18th June 2021.

In the meantime, Disney-Pixar's next movie Soul arrives on 20th November 2020.
