Downton Abbey: A New Era – you are cordially invited to watch the first trailer

The first trailer has arrived for Downton Abbey: A New Era, and Lord Grantham's country estate looks as sumptuous and resplendent as ever. The sequel to 2019's Downton Abbey movie, A New Era assembles a line-up of familiar faces and new characters for another nostalgic trip into the past. Before we get to the trailer, here's a poster outlining the ensemble.

In the manner of many British sequels, Downton Abbey: A New Era sends Lord Grantham, his family and their retinue abroad. This includes the joyously acidic Dowager Countess, played, as ever, by Maggie Smith, who takes centre stage in this storyline. It seems that the youthful Lady Violet had a pivotal encounter on the French Riviera, and a swanky villa has now come into her possession. This acts as the catalyst for an all-expenses-paid trip to the land of French chic.

While we await Smith's sure-to-be-superb zingers, we can revel in the host of returning faces. Hugh Bonneville, Michelle Dockery, Elizabeth McGovern, Allen Leech, Phyllis Logan, Jim Carter and more all show their faces in the trailer. New characters are played by the likes of Matthew Goode and Hugh Dancy.

Series creator Julian Fellowes is on scripting duties and Simon Curtis (My Week With Marilyn) takes over as director from Michael Engels. The first Downton movie capitalised on the TV show's huge popularity to the tune of $194 million worldwide. Can the sequel live up to it?

Downton Abbey: A New Era is released on 18th March 2022.
