Henry Cavill to return as Superman in new DC movie

What's that we see? Is it Christopher Reeve? Is it Brandon Routh? No, it's Henry Cavill, poised to return as Superman in a future DC comic book movie.

Deadline has confirmed that Supes will appear as part of future ensemble movies in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). Sadly, it seems that there are no plans for another Cavill standalone film any time soon.

The British actor (he of the reloading arms in Mission: Impossible - Fallout) made his debut as the character in 2013's Man of Steel, directed by Zack Snyder. Cavill reprised the role in Snyder's 2016 epic Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which marked Ben Affleck's debut as the Dark Knight.

In 2017, Cavill was controversially out-acted by his own top lip in Justice League, initially helmed by Snyder before Joss Whedon took over. Reshoots on Justice League overlapped with Cavill's schedule for Fallout, and distributor Paramount insisted he couldn't shave off the moustache he had grown for the part. The CGI artists on Justice League then had their work cut out making Supes look clean-shaven.

Facial hair, it seems, is more potent than kryptonite. Even so, with Snyder's own cut of Justice League set to premiere in 2021, perhaps that will restore some dignity to Superman?

Deadline indicates that Supes won't be appearing in completed movies Wonder Woman 1984 (due for release in August 2020) or The Suicide Squad. The latter film, scheduled for 2021, is director James Gunn's reboot of DC's much-maligned ensemble villain movie from 2016.

Does that mean Superman could potentially turn up in Shazam 2? The end of the first Shazam teased us with a Man of Steel stinger, although we only saw him from the iconic chest emblem downwards. Or perhaps he'll go toe to toe with Dwayne Johnson's Black Adam in the forthcoming movie of the same name?
