Indiana Jones 5 will film in the new year for a 2022 release

He may be 78 years old, but Harrison Ford is preparing to crack the whip again as Indiana Jones. The fifth instalment of the classic adventure series is set to begin filming in the new year, reports Deadline. And, in a first for the franchise, Steven Spielberg won't be taking the helm.

As reported on the blog earlier this year, Logan and Le Mans '66 director James Mangold will be behind the camera. That said, Spielberg will be involved in a producer capacity alongside LucasFilm's Kathleen Kennedy.

The Indy series is, of course, Spielberg's baby, developed with George Lucas while on holiday in Hawaii back in the late-1970s. Smarting from the failure of his bombastic war satire 1941, Spielberg spoke of his desire to make a Bond movie. Instead, he worked with Lucas to construct an iconic hero of his own.

The resulting franchise, Raiders of the Lost Ark in 1981, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom in 1984, and Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade in 1989, transformed star Harrison Ford in a modern-day matinee idol. The most recent film, 2008's The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is best forgotten – in fact, the pressure is on Mangold and the team to redeem the series after that blip.

Indiana Jones 5 is currently scheduled for release on 29th July 2022. Excited? Let us know @Cineworld.
