Emotional September dramas: Ricki and the Flash, Miss You Already and A Walk in the Woods

Looking for heartfelt drama this September? There's plenty to choose from, including the extraordinary Meryl Streep's latest Ricki and the Flash. Scroll down for details of what's on and when.

Ricki and the Flash

What's the story? Meryl Streep stars as an ageing rock star reunited with her family in this feel-good comedy-drama.

Decades ago, Ricki (Meryl Streep) gave up everything for her shot at rock and roll stardom. Now, years later, her long-suffering ex-husband Pete (Kevin Kline) gets in contact and asks Ricki to visit Chicago to help their estranged daughter Julie (Mamie Gummer), who's going through a difficult time.

Three-time Academy Award-winner Meryl Streep excels as a guitar-playing rock star in this uplifting comedy-drama from Oscar-winning Juno screenwriter Diablo and Oscar-winning Jonathan Demme (Silence of the Lambs). Streep reteams with her co-star from Sophie's Choice, Kevin Kline (another Oscar winner), and also appears opposite her real-life daughter Mamie Gummer. The film is based on Cody's own mother-in-law, who fronted a New Jersey bar band for many years.

Ricki and the Flash opens on 4th September.

A Walk in the Woods

What's the story? Bill Bryson's celebrated travel memoir is brought to the big screen courtesy of legendary actor/director Robert Redford.

Bill Bryson (Academy Award winner Robert Redford), instead of retiring to enjoy his loving and beautiful wife (Academy Award winner Emma Thompson), and large and happy family, challenges himself to hike the Appalachian Trail – 2,200 miles of America's most unspoiled, spectacular and rugged countryside from Georgia to Maine.

The peace and tranquility he hopes to find, though, is anything but, once he agrees to being accompanied by the only person he can find willing to join him on the trek – his long lost and former friend Katz (Academy Award nominee Nick Nolte), a down-on-his-luck serial philanderer who, after a lifetime of relying on his charm and wits to keep one step ahead of the law – sees the trip as a way to sneak out of paying some debts and sneak into one last adventure before its too late. The trouble is, the two have a completely different definition of the word, "adventure". Now they're about to find out that when you push yourself to the edge, the real fun begins.

A Walk in the Woods is released on 18th September.

Miss You Already

What's the story? Two childhood friends are tested by circumstances beyond their control in this moving drama.

Milly (Toni Collette) is the woman who has everything: a successful career; a rock-star husband and two beautiful children. Her best friend is Jess (Drew Barrymore), she works in a community garden; lives in a boathouse with her boyfriend Jago and desperately wants a baby.

Friends since childhood Jess and Milly can’t remember a time they didn’t share everything – secrets, clothes, even boyfriends, their differences are the glue that binds them together. That is until Milly is hit with the life changing news that she has breast cancer and needs Jess’s support more than ever.

As Jess tries to balance her own life as well as being there for Milly it is only a matter of time before the pressure on their bond takes its toll.

Miss You Already is released on 25th September.
