The fate of the planet Arrakis hangs in the balance in the upcoming Dune: Part Two. Director Denis Villeneuve is set to conclude his two-part Frank Herbert Dune adaptation spectacularly as the mythology of Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) increases in complexity. This is potentially set to affect all those in the known universe. Here are two brand new posters that tease what's to come.
In Dune: Part One, the fugitive heir presumptive Paul went to ground in the desert wastes of Arrakis. He and his mother, Bene Gesserit 'seer' Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson), took refuge with the indigenous Fremen and started to plot their revenge against the hateful House Harkonnen, who betrayed House Atreides over control of Arrakis' coveted spice reserves.
Dune: Part Two develops Paul's destiny as the Fremen 'mahdi' (chosen one) and the mystical super-being known as the 'kwisatz haderach'. In the first film, it's established that the female-only Bene Gesserit order has long been experimenting with bloodlines to bring about this fabled super-being. Being a male, Paul appears to break one of the covenants that is central to the Bene Gesserit sect.
As Paul prepares to ascend into the annals of myth and grows closer to Fremen warrior Chani (Zendaya), he finds himself wracked with terrible visions of multiple futures, all of them promising a bloody and sweeping uprising in his name. Is there a way through as the remnants of House Atreides enter the final conflict with House Harkonnen?
This is only part of the story, mind: we're yet to be introduced to Princess Irulan (Florence Pugh) who's established in Herbert's source novel as the chronicler of Paul's extraordinary saga. Irulan is the daughter of the scheming Emperor Shaddam IV (Christopher Walken) whose off-screen machinations in Dune: Part One led to the deal with the Harkonnens and the tragic betrayal of Paul's dynasty.
Meanwhile, the gluttonous Baron Harkonnen (Stellan Skarsgard) instigates an internecine conflict between his two nephews: Glossu 'Beast' Rabban (Dave Bautista), introduced in the first movie, and the vicious gladiatorial warrior Feyd-Rautha (Austin Butler) who is set to become Paul's sworn nemesis.
All of that and we haven't even mentioned the pivotal Water of Life sequence. Trust us when we say that things are about to become properly, transcendental trippy.
