Miniature heroes face the biggest adventure of their lives in Marvel Studios' upcoming Ant-Man and The Wasp. After two solo movies, two Avengers movies and an extended period stuck in the time-free Quantum Realm, Paul Rudd's shrinking super-thief Scott Lang/Ant-Man is back. And papa's also got a brand new trailer, fresh from the Brazil 2022 Comic-Con.
Quantumania is set to capitalise on Lang's lost period in-between the events of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. You'll remember that at the close of his previous solo movie, Ant-Man and The Wasp (2018), Scott embarked on an audacious experiment to explore the temporal mystery from whence Janet van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer) had came. As the mother of Scott's superhero opposite number Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly), Janet was well positioned to warn Scott about the realm's perils.
However, upon going in, Scott found himself stranded when those responsible for his wellbeing were snapped into oblivion by Thanos (Josh Brolin). Fast-forward through the alternately triumphant/tragic arc of Avengers: Endgame, whereby Scott re-emerged and came to terms with his now-teenage daughter Cassie, and it's safe to say he's been through a lot.
However, a Marvel hero never rests. In the third (and final?) solo Ant-Man movie, Scott, Hope, Janet and Scott's mentor Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) must go back in. The reasons? Not entirely clear at this stage, but the movie is a critical puzzle piece in the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). It kick-starts Marvel Phase Five, introduces Cassie Lang (Kathryn Newton) in her heroic alter-ego of Stature (we glimpsed her costume in the previous trailer).
However, even more critically the movie is establishing connections between theatrical content and the world of Marvel on streaming. Another variation of classic comic book villain Kang the Conqueror is set to make an appearance after Kang variant 'He Who Remains' appeared at the end of the Tom Hiddleston-centric Loki.
As before, Kang will be portrayed by rising star Jonathan Majors. However, unlike the previous Kang, who was deceptively goofy, even flippant in nature, the new character looks like he means business. He's also manipulative, recognising that Scott still isn't getting his dues and being recognised for his Ant-Man persona in the wake of Avengers: Endgame.
How does the Quantum Realm match up with what we know about the multiverse? Is Kang a force for good or bad? Is there another super-villain yet to be revealed? And who is cult favourite Bill Murray playing? Watch the latest trailer in which all of these questions lurk on the margins but, tantalisingly, aren't answered.
