Wonka: first glimpse of Timothée Chalamet as the Roald Dahl character

Does the talented young Timotheé Chalamet have what it takes to whisk us into a world of pure imagination? The star of Dune and The French Dispatch takes the lead role in prequel movie Wonka, which will dramatise the formative years of classic Roald Dahl creation Willy Wonka.

The movie is currently filming on the Cobb at Lyme Regis, and Chalamet teased his casting with a sly reference to Gene Wilder's take from the 1971 movie Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

As you can see, the costume is in place, while behind the camera the omens are very good indeed. Paddington and Paddington 2 director Paul King is at the helm, and given he worked wonders with Michael Bond's source material, we imagine that Dahl's stories are in excellent hands.

King reunites with his Paddington cohort Simon Farnaby for the screenplay ("Stop that sexy sister!") while Harry Potter's David Heyman produces. Sprinkling more fairy dust on the proceedings is an excellent supporting cast including Olivia Colman, Sally Hawkins, Keegan-Michael Key and Rowan Atkinson.

Wonka is scheduled for release on 17th March 2023.
