2020 blockbuster preview: 26 movies to watch in Cineworld

2020 is finally here, and we're rounding up 26 of the year's biggest blockbusters showing in Cineworld. From epic blockbusters to family animations, we've got it all covered – scroll down to find out more.

Birds of Prey

Margot Robbie first appeared as the anarchic Harley Quinn in 2016's Suicide Squad. In that movie, however, she was part of a wider ensemble. This time, she takes centre stage in an anarchic comic book odyssey, leading a group of female DC vigilantes on a mission to right wrongs, with Ewan McGregor appearing as vicious baddie Black Mask.

Birds of Prey is released on the 7th of February.

Dolittle

Robert Downey Jr. is now done as Iron Man, and he's now setting his sights on another classic character. He plays the animal loving (and animal-conversing) Doctor Dolittle in this refresh of the classic 1960s musical. Emma Thompson, Rami Malek and John Cena are among those voicing the cute critters.

Dolittle is released on the 7th of February.

Onward

Disney-Pixar returns with another suitably magical conceit: a fantasy land in which elves, unicorns, fairies and the like are totally normal. Chris Pratt and Tom Holland voice the two elf brothers who embark on a quest to bring their late father back to life, so don't forget to pack some tissues.

Onward is released on the 6th of March.

A Quiet Place: Part II

Back in 2017, John Krasinski put his stamp on the horror genre with surprise hit A Quiet Place. Now, star Emily Blunt is compelled to hold her breath all over again in the eagerly anticipated sequel, picking up on the battle with hideous monsters that hunt via sound.

A Quiet Place: Part II is released on the 20th of March.

Mulan

The Disney live-action reboot trend goes full steam ahead with this glossy, mega-budget revision of their 1998 animated hit. Liu Yifei is the brave Mulan who vows to bring honour to her family, disguising herself as a warrior to help defeat a deadly enemy in mystical, ancient China.

Mulan is released on the 27th of March.

No Time To Die

Daniel Craig signs off from Bond with the 25th movie in the long-running 007 franchise. This time, Britain's greatest secret agent faces a personal threat in the form of Rami Malek's antagonist, while Cary Fukunaga steers things from behind the camera. Phoebe Waller-Bridge promises to lend acerbic wit to the script.

No Time To Die is released on the 2nd of April.

Black Widow

Scarlett Johansson finally gets her own standalone Marvel movie, one that shows us the origins of KGB assassin Natasha Romanoff, kicking off Phase Four of the MCU in the process. Florence Pugh and Rachel Weisz are fellow operatives in the 'black widow' spy programme, and Stranger Things' David Harbour is also on board.

Black Widow is released on the 1st of May.

Fast & Furious 9

Vin Diesel fires up the engines again in the ninth instalment of the rubber-burning automotive franchise. He's joined by many series veterans including Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson and Ludacris, while regular director Justin Lin is back behind the camera.

Fast & Furious 9 is released on the 22nd of May.

Wonder Woman 1984

Gal Gadot's warrior Diana Prince enters the era of MTV and big hair in this continuation of the 2017 DC comic book hit. Patty Jenkins once again helms, Chris Pine is back again (somehow) as Steve Trevor and Kristen Wiig is the villainous Barbara Minnerva aka Cheetah.

Wonder Woman 1984 is released on the 5th of June.

Soul

Disney-Pixar's second movie of 2020 is a richly philosophical one in the manner of Inside Out. Jamie Foxx voices an aspiring jazz musician who dies and discovers the otherworldly realm where souls are elected to enter certain bodies.

Soul is released on the 19th of June.

Minions 2

Gru's adorably anarchic helpers are back for their second spin-off movie, although we know relatively little about what's involved. Still, we can surely expect craziness and giggling at the word 'bottom'.

Minions 2 is released on the 10th of July.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife

Director Jason Reitman follows in his father Ivan's footsteps by fashioning a direct sequel to the 1984 and 1989 Ghostbusters hits. Finn Wolfhard is one member of a family who discover their Ghostbusters heritage in this effects-packed comedy adventure.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife is released on the 10th of July.

Top Gun: Maverick

Some 35 years after Tom Cruise first felt the need for speed, he's back in jet-fighting sequel Top Gun: Maverick. The titular character is back, older, wiser but no less cocky, as he's tasked with schooling a group of new cadets, including Whiplash's Miles Teller.

Top Gun: Maverick is released on the 17th of July.

Tenet

Three years after his seminal World War II thriller Dunkirk, director Christopher Nolan returns with a highly mysterious story of espionage and time-travel. John David Washington leads an impressive cast that also includes Robert Pattinson, Kenneth Branagh and Michael Caine.

Tenet is released on the 17th of July.

Jungle Cruise

Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt pair up for this Disney adventure based on the theme park ride of the same name. They embark on a dangerous, action-packed quest to discover a magical tree, no doubt fashioning superb chemistry along the way.

Jungle Cruise is released on the 24th of July.

Bill and Ted Face the Music

Excellent! Slacker dweebs Bill and Ted (Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter) are back on our screens for the first time since 1991. Our loveably goofy duo have aged, but if you think they've gained any brain cells along the way, think again.

Bill and Ted Face the Music is released on the 21st of August.

The Conjuring 3

The Conjuring Universe continues to expand with this third helping of things that go bump in the night. Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson are back, as is The Curse of La Llorona director Michael Chaves.

The Conjuring 3 is released on the 11th of September.

The King's Man

Director Matthew Vaughn fashions an origin story to his hit Kingsman spy series in this all-action comic book adventure. Taron Egerton and Colin Firth are out, Harris Dickinson and Ralph Fiennes are in as we see how the top-secret Kingsman agency formed for the very first time.

The King's Man is released on the 16th of September.

Death on the Nile

Kenneth Branagh's take on classic Agatha Christie whodunit Murder on the Orient Express was a box office hit in 2017. Branagh now returns to once again pull double-duty as actor and director, applying genius detective Hercule Poirot's whiskers for a diabolical Egyptian murder mystery.

Death on the Nile is released on the 9th of October.

Halloween Kills

In 2018, the Halloween franchise was rebooted to enjoyably chilling effect with Jamie Lee Curtis once again asserting her stamp on the role of the tenacious Laurie Strode. She returns in this sure-to-be-terrifying sequel from director David Gordon Green, which was filmed back to back with 2021 follow-up Halloween Ends.

Halloween Kills is released on the 16th of October.

Eternals

Phase Four of the MCU continues apace with one of their most fantastical properties so far. The 'eternals' are a group of all-powerful, celestial beings that could knoc Thanos into a cocked hat, and the all-star cast includes Angelina Jolie, Kumail Nanjiani and Kit Harington.

Eternals is released on the 6th of November.

Godzilla vs Kong

The latest instalment in the Warner Bros 'MonsterVerse' franchise gives us the behemoth battle we've been waiting for, as two of cinema's greatest monsters finally slug it out. Alexander Skarsgard and Millie Bobby Brown are among the humans valiantly trying to stay out of the way.

Godzilla vs Kong is released on the 20th of November.

Raya and the Last Dragon

Here's an original property from Walt Disney Animation Studios, the team behind the likes of Wreck-It Ralph. Set in a mystical realm called Kumandra, it centres on a young girl in search of the world's last surviving dragon. Awkwafina is among those in the voice cast.

Raya and the Last Dragon is released on the 27th of November.

Dune

Director Denis Villeneuve is one of the 21st century's greatest sci-fi filmmakers, having helmed Arrival and Blade Runner 2049. Therefore the prospect of him adapting Frank Herbert's celebrated novel Dune, set on the distant planet of Arrakis, is very exciting indeed. Timothee Chalamet, Josh Brolin and Oscar Isaac star.

Dune is released on the 18th of December.

West Side Story

Aside from the opening sequence in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Steven Spielberg has never tackled a musical before. But that's all set to change with his remake of the Oscar-winning 1961 blockbuster, one focusing on the battle between gangs the Jets and the Sharks. Baby Driver's Ansel Elgort is Jet leader Tony.

West Side Story is released on the 18th of December.
