The first trailer for Joss Whedon's Avengers: Age of Ultron has finally landed (following an unofficial leak earlier this week), in which our feisty Marvel superheroes face their greatest threat to date.
Tony Stark/Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Bruce Banner/Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Steve Rogers/Captain America (Chris Evans), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) must confront deadly robot Ultron, who plans to bring mankind to its knees.
Voiced with silky menace by Blacklist actor James Spader, fingers crossed Ultron will provide a memorable note of villainy that the Marvel movies have so far lacked (bar Tom Hiddleston's Loki inThor and Avengers Assemble).
It seems as if our fractious group of Avengers will be pushed to their absolute limits, with Stark solemnly declaring, "It's the end of the path I started us on." There are also the merest hints of the much-loved Marvel 'Civil War' storyline that pits Stark against Captain America, and which is reported to be taking flight in Captain America 3, due for release in 2016.
Other images raise teasing questions – a shirtless Banner staggering through a snowy forest; Captain America kicking down the door of a mountaintop castle; and the presence of new faces Quicksilver (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), both of whom are barely glimpsed in this promo.
Avengers: Age of Ultron opens in Cineworld on 24th April 2015. What do you think of the trailer? Tell us in the comments.
