James Gunn and Peter Safran have grand plans to revamp the DC Universe. With Shazam! Fury of the Gods now on release, we're already looking ahead to the release of The Flash in June. Beyond that? Prepare to say hi to Blue Beetle, which brings Cobra Kai star Xolo Maridueña into the franchise for the first time.
The rising star portrays the under-the-radar DC Comics hero who splits his identity between Blue Beetle and that of college graduate Jaime Reyes. When he is exposed to an extraterrestrial scarab insect, Jaime finds that a super-powered exoskeleton is now grafted onto his body, prompting an action-packed origin story of discovery.
The original Blue Beetle comics hail from the 1940s, and longstanding fans have been waiting years for the character to get his own movie. With a supporting cast that includes Adriana Barraza, Damían Alcázar, Raoul Max Trujillo and Susan Sarandon, fingers crossed the Blue Beetle movie will do the property justice.
