What a vile year it's been, let's be honest. Whilst we go trepanning for optimistic nuggets in the era of COVID-19, we bring ourselves back to the extraordinary individual that is Captain Tom Moore. The former Army officer, who served in multiple campaigns in the Far East, emerged as a hero back on 6th April when he started to walk laps of his garden to raise money for NHS Charities Together.
Astonishingly, Tom had raised more than £32 million by the time of his 100th birthday on 30th April, vastly exceeding his initial target of £1000, and making him the recipient of a Royal flypast, a knighting by the Queen and a Michael Ball cover version of 'You'll Never Walk Alone'. Little wonder that the war veteran's inspiring story is now giving rise to a movie – and Tom has a very specific actor in mind to play him.
Variety reports: "The U.K.’s Fred Films and Powder Keg Pictures won a bidding war for the life rights to the former British Army captain and World War II hero, who raised £38.9 million ($49.4 million) for the U.K.’s National Health Service by walking laps around his garden in the run-up to his 100th birthday during the COVID-19 pandemic."
So who could possibly play this real-life hero? The great man himself says: "I don’t know of any 100-year-old actors, but I’m sure Michael Caine or Anthony Hopkins could do a wonderful job if they were prepared to age up!"
Variety indicates that the film is being "fast-tracked" into production in 2021 in a joint effort by studios Fred Films and Powder Keg Pictures. The two companies previously collaborated on Cornish music group drama Fisherman's Friends, which emerged as a sleeper hit in 2017. A sequel has now been greenlit.
