Whip-pans, crash zooms, still frames, changing aspect ratios, live-action simulating the look of an animated movie... One need only glimpse two seconds of the Asteroid City trailer to know it's a Wes Anderson movie. The Oscar-winning quirk-meister behind The Grand Budapest Hotel, Isle of Dogs and countless other hipster concoctions is back. And this time he's returned to the United States for the first time since 2012's endearing Boy Scout/Girl Scout love story Moonrise Kingdom.
Resplendent in retro fonts and a myriad bold colours that look typically breathtaking, Asteroid City gathers up a group of neurotic desert-dwellers for a star-gazing trip like no other. And yes, there are UFOs involved. The movie focuses on the youngsters tasked with gazing at the heavens and their parents – what are the chances that the latter group will be exponentially odder and more messed up than the kids?
That's certainly the impression we get from the trailer, which teases possibly the best cast of any movie in 2023. (Only Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer is capable of running it close.) Deep breath: in the movie are Jason Schwartzman, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hanks, Jeffrey Wright, Tilda Swinton, Bryan Cranston, Edward Norton, Adrien Brody, Liev Schreiber, Hope Davis, Stephen Park, Rupert Friend, Maya Hawke, Steve Carell, Matt Dillon, Hong Chau, Willem Dafoe, Margot Robbie, Tony Revolori, Jeff Goldblum, Rita Wilson and Jarvis Cocker.
We count several Wes Anderson newbies there, namely Hanks and Carell. Those guys possess enough A-list clout to lead their own movie. When they're merely players within the wider ensemble, you know this is one hell of a line-up.
