Prepare to have your nostalgia bone tickled with this special glimpse at Ghostbusters: Afterlife. The movie is a continuation of the Ghostbusters mythology from the original 1984 and 1989 movies, ditching Paul Feig's controversial 2016 reboot. And this sneak peek leans heavily on the fan-pleasing references as Paul Rudd's small-town high-school teacher gets an unexpected surprise from a pack of marshmallows.
In the first Ghostbusters movie, the climactic arrival of the over-sized Stay Puft was anticipated by a pack of marshmallows spied in the kitchen of the haunted Dana Barrett (Sigourney Weaver). And we all know how well that particular haunting went for the citizens of New York. These pesky new Mini-Pufts may look adorable, but they're sure to cause havoc. (We're getting strong Gremlins vibes from the mixture of sweetness and menace that they pose.)
In fact, legacy is key to this new Ghostbusters movie. Director Jason Reitman (Juno) takes over from his father Ivan who helmed the first two films. And Afterlife explicitly calls back to the events that occurred in Manhattan several decades ago: Rudd's character claims to be a witness to the events, and there's a key reveal of a romper suit hidden in a creaky old farmhouse. The suggestion is that our young heroes, Trevor (Finn Wolfhard) and Phoebe (Mckenna Grace), discover their ancestral legacy to the original ghostbusting team.
Returning to the clip, we're loving the tone, particularly the tonal callback in the music to Elmer Bernstein's spooky score from the original 1984 blockbuster. Will Ghostbusters: Afterlife honour the spirit of New York's finest? Series veterans Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Sigourney Weaver, Ernie Hudson and Annie Potts are all appearing, so fingers crossed for its arrival on 12th November 2021.
