Going to the cinema should mean the whole package: snacks, a drink, and watching your chosen movie the way it was always intended to be seen. Whether or not you’ve experienced a movie Filmed For IMAX before, it’s a spectacle that needs to be seen again and again, with plenty of 2026 movie releases to go experience what Filmed For IMAX is all about. From a new installment in the Star Wars universe to Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, see what else is coming up on the Filmed For IMAX slate.
Offering a larger, more expansive and immersive viewing down to every last detail, we explain exactly what a Filmed For IMAX movie is, as well as all the titles available to watch now and coming up throughout the year.
What does it mean when a movie is Filmed For IMAX?
It’s not just about a fancy screen, watching a movie Filmed For IMAX means it’s been specially curated for the format from start-to-finish. Each of these upcoming IMAX movies has utilised either IMAX-certified digital or film cameras, with everything from set to audio to special effects carefully considered and optimised for the most visually immersive film viewing.
How? IMAX-certified cameras are the best in the business, offering the sharpest, brightest, highest-resolution picture. When shooting movies, these are shot in IMAX’s specific aspect ratios, including 1.90:1, branded Expanded Aspect Ratio (EAR). This sees the picture you’ll see in Cineworld 26% larger than a standard cinema screen, getting you up close to the details and offering a unique picture that draws you right in.
And it’s not just about the cameras – post-production utilises IMAX technologies Digital Media Remastering (DMR) to optimise movies, along with ensuring audio packs as much of a heart-pounding punch as the visuals.
So what can you watch upcoming Filmed For IMAX in 2026?
Mercy (now screening)
It makes sense that a film about the endless possibilities of technology in the future should use the most advanced cameras to bring its story to the big screen. That’s the case with Chris Pratt’s tense new sci-fi, in which a police detective finds himself on trial for the murder of his own wife. In turn, he finds himself put in front of the AI Judge he’d once been advocating for, given just 90 minutes to prove his innocence.
A 2026 Filmed For IMAX title, that means, from start to finish, IMAX worked closely with Timur Bekmambetov. Unlike IMAX films that are optimised post for IMAX screenings, everything from initial camera tests and beyond is thought about in intrinsic detail. In the case of Mercy, IMAX-certified digital cameras were used, and the film features 62 minutes of EAR footage, offering a substantially bigger picture that lets you see even more details.
The Bride! (6th March)
Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein certainly had a moment in 2025, but what about the monster’s wife? You know who else had a moment in 2025? Jessie Buckley in Hamnet. Well, Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Bride! is bringing both our latest hyperfixations together, inspired by both Shelley’s novel and the 1935 film Bride of Frankenstein, following the tumultuous love story of Frankenstein’s monster and the bride Dr. Euphronious created for him.
Throw in Christian Bale, it could only ever be a Filmed For IMAX title. More details to come.
Project Hail Mary (20th March)
A book to screen adaptation of Andy Weir’s best-selling novel (the same author that wrote The Martian) comes Project Hail Mary, in which a science teacher (Ryan Gosling) is blasted off into space. Waking up on the spaceship, light years from home, he has no memory of who he is or why he’s here. Over time, though, his memories begin to return, and he realises the mission he must solve in order to save Earth.
The space scenes are going to be out of this world (sorry, not sorry), so we’re excited to see what IMAX technologies were used to create this Filmed For IMAX title.
Mortal Kombat II (8th May)
Not to quote Taylor Swift, but it’s been a long time coming… Mortal Kombat II has faced numerous delays due to the writers strikes, and its release date has jumped around a fair bit. However, it’s finally coming, a long anticipated sequel to the 2021 film and a video game adaptation of the video game series of the same name, and will see the champions of Earthrealm forced to battle against one another in an attempt to resist the rule of Shao Kahn.
While the first film was optimised for IMAX, Mortal Kombat II is the first in the series to be Filmed For IMAX, with more details on what to expect coming soon.
The Mandalorian & Grogu (22nd May)
The dynamic duo are back – and this time they’re on the big screen. Now at the dawn of a new era with the New Republic just starting out, Din Djarin and his apprentice Grogu are hired to help protect everything the rebellion had fought for.
2017’s The Last Jedi is the only other film in the Star Wars franchise to use IMAX cameras, so it feels particularly special that The Mandalorian & Grogu has been Filmed For IMAX, though we don’t yet know how much footage will feature utilising IMAX cameras.
Supergirl (26th June)
The latest in James Gunn’s DC Universe, Supergirl follows on from last year’s successful Superman as Milly Alcock joins as Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl. A bit of a partygirl, and certainly tainted by her traumatic upbringing, Kara is pulled into warfare when a ruthless adversary strikes too close to home.
Rob Hardy joins director Craig Gillepsie behind the camera as director of photography, with this Filmed For IMAX title of course utilising IMAX cameras, with more information on their process coming soon.
The Odyssey (17th July)
Leaving behind events of the 20th Century and those taking place in outer space, The Odyssey is an epic action movie set after the Trojan war as Odysseus makes the dangerous journey home and comes across Cyclops, sirens, and the witch-goddess Circe. Astonishingly, this is “the first time Homer’s foundational saga [has been brought] to IMAX film screens”.
At this point, is it a Christopher Nolan film if it isn’t filmed using IMAX cameras? Where some Filmed For IMAX titles might have significant chunks of the film shot using IMAX cameras, The Odyssey was shot exclusively using them.
