Compelling new drama BlackBerry explores the surprising history behind the world-famous hand-held device. Lucky Unlimited members got to see the movie in advance during last night's preview screening.
It’s 1996, and Mike Lazaridis (Jay Baruchel) and his business partner and best friend Douglas Fregin (Matt Johnson) are on the edge of creating the world’s first smartphone. Unfortunately for them, they are less business savvy than they are tech and struggle to keep their company, Research in Motion, afloat. Everything changes when cunning businessman Jim Balsillie (Glenn Howerton) agrees to join the company, bringing with him the money and experience needed to create and sell a prototype of their invention.
The movie's blend of tech-savvy, topicality and quick-fire humour has had Unlimited members sending in their responses. So, what did they make of it? We've curated a few reactions.
I was genuinely surprised how much I enjoyed it. I’ve worked in telecoms for most of the last 20 years and it was great to see a relatively niche subject matter (ie the tech side of it) that I actually understood.— Kate J (@katej1984) October 2, 2023
An excellent, engaging film. In my top 5 for 2023
Not long came from there, from watching it. A VERY BIG insight to the world of Blackberry & how it rose high from nothing & then at its Peak, dropped all of a sudden to its lowest! Good cast, good story/plot & LOVED the comedy. A few eye-opening & jaw-dropping moments!! — DWAYNE JOHNSON (@DWAYNEJ89432) October 2, 2023
Fascinating look at the rise and fall is a tech giant. It was incredible how ahead of the curve those guys were in the 90s and how quickly it fell apart. The film did a very good job of keeping the tech side accessible without over simplifying it.— The Fourth Dimension (@Mike_J_Lord) October 2, 2023
Honestly, my favourite film of the year.— Kit the One With the Angelic Face (@KitKatisWeird7) October 2, 2023
I always knew that kind of story could be fascinating. But I'm glad I finally got to learn more about the Blackberry.
VERY interesting film.
It made me miss my BlackBerry 😭— Jake Ward (@gaminggeekdev) October 2, 2023
I never knew about this crazy journey the BlackBerry went through and want more films like this about other products so I can know if there's more wild stories 👀
