Five movies at Cineworld to brighten up your Blue Monday

It may be Blue Monday, but why should it be the unhappiest day of the year? Turn that frown upside down and get to your local Cineworld to feast on the sparkling line-up of new releases.

The following list of movies, ranging from Oscar contenders to all-action outbursts, is exactly what you need to banish those January blues.

And the best thing? These movies will still be screening at Cineworld even after Blue Monday is in the rearview mirror. Keep on reading to discover what they are.

1. Poor Things

Join Emma Stone's free-thinking human experiment Bella Baxter in this outlandish, arresting and hilarious comedy. Stone is being tipped to win her second Oscar for this story of one woman's search for liberation, both physical and intellectual, amidst a visually dazzling steam-punk world. It's exactly the kind of madness one expects from Yorgos Lanthimos, acclaimed director of The Favourite and The Lobster. Mark Ruffalo and Willem Dafoe lend scene-stealing support.

2. The Boys in the Boat

George Clooney adapts the rousing true story of the University of Washington rowing team and their quest for glory at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Feel the impact of the blades against the water as our ragtag crew of sporting heroes, including Callum Turner's Joe Rance, push themselves to their limits to impress their taciturn coach Al Ulbrickson (Joel Edgerton) and hit the big time on the world stage.

3. The Beekeeper

Who can resist a bit of Jason Statham? The UK's finest action export plays an innocuous beekeeper with a hidden past as a deadly US government operative. When The Stath's gruff anti-hero Adam Clay learns of the death of his neighbour, all manner of explosive hell breaks loose with oily villains Jeremy Irons and Josh Hutcherson doing their best to avoid the maelstrom.

4. Wonka

This delightful Roald Dahl prequel is still doing strong at the top of the UK box office, so whether you've seen it once or several times, who could resist another bite of Willy Wonka's sweet origin story? Timothée Chalamet portrays the younger, idealistic Wonka who is in the act of setting up his chocolate empire, as director Paul King (Paddington) marshals some foot-tapping musical numbers that are bound to stick in your head.

5. Anyone But You

Sizzling chemistry is the order of the day in this cheeky rom-com that pairs hot rising stars Glen Powell (Top Gun: Maverick) and Sydney Sweeney (Euphoria). They play bickering, antagonistic enemies who must pretend to be a couple while on a sun-drenched holiday Down Under. Looking for a fun throwback to the heyday of the romantic comedy genre? You've come to the right place.
