Dwayne Johnson gives more details on Hobbs & Shaw 2

Can you smell what Dwayne Johnson is cooking? That, friends, is the scent of a new Hobbs & Shaw movie – sweaty, with an undercurrent of burning tyres and an overarching whiff of pyrotechnics.

Having recently confirmed a Hobbs & Shaw sequel, Johnson has again taken to Instagram to give more details. We already know that his character, Luke Hobbs, is set to reunite with frenemy Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) in the sequel to the Fast & Furious franchise spin-off.

Johnson says that Hobbs & Shaw 2 will again feature the input of screenwriter Chris Morgan, who wrote the first movie. Morgan is a key member of the Fast & Furious crew, and has been with the franchise since 2006's The Fast & The Furious: Tokyo Drift. And, we'll be getting some new faces, too.

"Chris Morgan, of course, will write again, Seven Bucks Productions will produce again," Johnson announced. "We created a lot of great characters, from Vanessa Kirby's character to Idris Elba, and Eiza Gonzalez. And now in this next instalment we have a few more surprises and great characters to create. Not characters that Hobbs can just kick the s*** out of, because that's boring, but characters I think that you guys are gonna fall in love with. Villains, anti-heroes, and heroes all across the board."

Released in August 2019, Hobbs & Shaw offered a platform for two fan-favourite characters that were introduced in separate Fast & Furious movies. Hobbs first arrived in 2011's Fast Five, while Shaw emerged in 2017's Furious 7. The characters referred to by Johnson on Instagram are Vanessa Kirby's Hattie Shaw, sister of Deckard (somewhat implausibly), and Idris Elba's genetically enhanced super-villain Brixton.

At the end of the movie, Brixton was remotely executed by the director of the terrorist organisation Eteon. Who that character is, we don't know yet, but it sets them up as a potential antagonist in the sequel. Presumably, that person is one of the new characters referred to by Johnson. Hattie survived, and we imagine that we'll see more of her in the sequel, Kirby continuing to demonstrate the action chops that we first saw in Mission: Impossible - Fallout.

The Hobbs & Shaw movie was a huge hit, grossing more than $700 million worldwide, showing there's life beyond the canonical Fast & Furious films. Speaking of which, Fast & Furious 9 has now been punted to April 2021 in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. It sees the return of Vin Diesel as Dominic Toretto, who this time confronts his long-lost brother (played by Bumblebee's John Cena).

For his part, Johnson is about to begin filming on DC's Black Adam movie, scheduled for release in December 2021. Sadly, we're going to be deprived of him on the big screen this year: planned Disney adventure movie Jungle Cruise, co-starring Emily Blunt, has been moved to July 2021.
