Scream VI trailer brings Ghostface's reign of terror to Manhattan

Be prepared for an (un)pleasant surprise. The first full trailer for Scream VI has slashed its way online and it's slicing up the format. Before we get there, here's the poster.

The long-running franchise has always capitalised on its satirical ability to both deconstruct and lean into our favourite slasher movie conventions.

However, outside of brief sections in Scream 3 (2000), there's never been a Scream movie set in the big city – until now. Check out the trailer below (maybe from behind your fingers?) as Ghostface returns. This time, however, the killer has left leafy Woodsboro for thronging New York City...

As the poster and the trailer make clear, series veteran Sidney Prescott is nowhere to be found. That's because star Neve Campbell vacated the movie over a pay dispute.

That leaves Scream 5 survivors Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega front and centre. Their characters, siblings Sam and Tara Carpenter, have moved to the Big Apple to leave their Woodsboro trauma behind. But wouldn't you know it, a copycat Ghostface has followed them, forcing them to rely on franchise favourite Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) for survival tips. But then again, she isn't safe either...

Also returning from the previous film: Mason Gooding and Jasmin Savoy Brown. From Scream 4 (2011): Hayden Panettiere. And new arrivals in the series: Samara Weaving, Dermot Mulroney, Henry Czerny and Tony Revolori. Who might the killer be? And how will they adapt? We already see the killer toting a shotgun in the trailer as opposed to the usual trusty knife, and as per the nature of 'requels' (sequels that also serve as reboots), the usual Ghostface games are sure to be given a nasty twist.

One thing's for sure, returning directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, along with screenwriters James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick, are sure to keep us guessing throughout.

Scream VI is released at Cineworld on March 10th. Don't forget to check out our list of 2023 horror movies.
