So you might be aware that last night brought us the epic 2020 Super Bowl – but we're not here to talk about American football. We're all about the awesome trailers that dropped during the annual, all-American extravaganza, ones teasing some of the year's biggest upcoming releases. And because we're so good to you, we've rounded them up right here for your viewing pleasure.
1. Sonic the Hedgehog (released 14th February)
Racing onto Cineworld screens in time for Valentine's Day (video game movies can be romantic, right?), this big-screen adaptation of the Sega icon promises all manner of super-fast hi-japes. Ben Schwartz voices the eponymous blue hero, James Marsden is his human cohort and Jim Carrey brings his brand of maniacal energy to classic villain, Doctor Robotnik.
The Super Bowl trailer features American sports stars Michael Thomas of the New Orleans Saints, Christian McCaffrey of the Carolina Panthers, Olympic champion Allyson Felix and NASCAR driver Kyle Busch.
2. The Invisible Man (released 28th February)
Mad Men and Us star Elisabeth Moss leads this contemporary remake of the classic 1933 thriller, itself taken from H.G. Wells' novel. Moss' presence is set to invest the new movie with topical gender undercurrents, as she plays a woman tormented by the presence of her former abusive husband. It sounds like a clever twist on the old formula, and comes to us from Blumhouse, the horror geniuses behind the likes of Get Out and the aforementioned Us.
3. A Quiet Place: Part II (released 20th March)
More spooky chills were teased at the 2020 Super Bowl with the new teaser for A Quiet Place: Part II. Emily Blunt is back as imperilled yet tenacious mother Evelyn, who must lead her grown-up children (Noah Jupe and Millicent Simmonds), plus her newborn baby, on a journey in the midst of monsters that hunt via sound. 28 Days Later's Cillian Murphy is among the new faces, and John Krasinski is back as director, following the blockbuster success of A Quiet Place back in 2018.
4. Mulan (released 27th March)
The Disney remake machine steps up a gear with this mega-budget, lavishly staged martial arts epic. To be more specific, it's a 'wuxia' movie, defined as a blend of martial arts and high fantasy, and the new Super Bowl trailer teases the film's sense of scale. Whale Rider helmer Niki Caro guides the story of brave warrior Mulan, a woman who disguises herself as a male soldier to battle a deadly threat. Yifei Liu is Mulan herself, and the supporting cast is a who's who of Asian blockbuster stars, including Jet Li, Donnie Yen and Gong Li.
5. No Time To Die (released 2nd April)
James Bond is back in action in the 25th movie in the franchise – and it's almost time to bid farewell to Daniel Craig in the role. Craig reinvented the role of 007 in 2006's Casino Royale, investing him with gritty and emotional nuances, and now his Bond faces a deadly threat in the form of Rami Malek's Safin. No Time To Die is helmed by True Detective's Cary Fukunaga, and as we anticipate Craig's curtain call, we wonder if incoming actor Lashana Lynch, playing 00 agent Nomi, is poised to take over...
6. Black Widow (released 1st May)
Scarlett Johansson gets her long-overdue Marvel solo movie, and it's lined up one hell of a cast. Johansson's KGB operative Natasha Romanoff is front and centre, supported by Little Women Oscar nominee Florence Pugh, The Favourite's Rachel Weisz and Stranger Things' David Harbour. Berlin Syndrome director Cate Shortland helms this first instalment in Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), which continues this November with Eternals.
7. Fast & Furious 9: The Fast Saga (released 22nd May)
That subtitle 'The Fast Saga' is surely a statement: the ninth movie in the blockbuster franchise is distinct from last year's spin-off movie Hobbs & Shaw, and reunites the Fast & Furious family. Leading the way is Vin Diesel as ace car thief Dom Toretto, and he's joined by Bumblebee's John Cena as Toretto's brother. Who will win this roaring testosterone-off?
8. The Spongebob Movie: Sponge on the Run (released 22nd May)
Spongebob and the gang are back for their latest big-screen adventure, although in typical style, their Super Bowl trailer put an irreverent twist on things.
9. Minions: The Rise of Gru (released 10th July)
Forget Baby Groot – Baby Gru is where it's at. The Despicable Me super-villain gets his own seventies-themed origin story in this follow-up to the 2015 blockbuster – although don't expect his loyal, pill-shaped followers to look discernibly older or younger. The Super Bowl spot is a teaser for the first full trailer arriving on the 5th of February.
10. Top Gun: Maverick (released 17th July)
This summer, we return to the danger zone with Tom Cruise's cocky fighter pilot Maverick. Only this time, he has to pass on words of wisdom to a set of new recruits, including Bradley (Miles Teller), son of Maverick's late wingman, Goose (Anthony Edwards). Can this possibly resurrect the original film's cheesily enjoyable MTV-era atmosphere for the millennial generation?
