Avengers: Endgame is reportedly so long it may require an intermission

How much Avengers is too much Avengers? We're asking because April's Avengers: Endgame, the culmination of phase three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), is currently clocking in at a weighty three hours long.

That makes it the longest movie in the Marvel franchise so far, besting its 2018 predecessor Avengers: Infinity War, which spanned two hours and 40 minutes. In fact, so epic is the running time that rumours suggest an intermission might be needed.

Said rumours stem from the Twitter account of www.comingsoon.net journalist Alan Cerny.

Avengers: Endgame reportedly running at three hours long with intermission

Although something of a rarity in today's movie landscape, intermissions aren't unheard of. Those old enough to catch the trilogy on the big screen may remember the Lord of the Rings movies being broken up with a pause midway through. Quentin Tarantino's most recent movie The Hateful Eight also showcased an intermission during its 70MM screenings.

In a new interview with Collider, directors the Russo brothers confirmed the current running time as three hours. However, Anthony Russo points out that "we have screened the movie four times for audiences now... For the first three screenings, not a single person got up to go to the bathroom".

"I think the studio is down with what the best story is," says Joe Russo. "Right now, we think the movie is playing well and we’ve had great responses from our test audiences and we’re feeling very good about where it is. We’re still doing work to it. We’re not done with it. Again, this is a culmination film of 22 movies, it’s a lot of storytelling to work into it. Emotion is an intrinsic part of that to us. When you have to tell a really complicated story and you want strong emotional moments with the characters, it just requires a certain amount of real estate. This one, in particular, feels like three hours worth of real estate."
