Crank up 'All By Myself' and break out the blue soup because we're getting a fourth instalment in the Bridget Jones universe. The newly announced Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, based on Helen Fielding's book, will reunite us with Renee Zellweger's endearing title character who has progressed from hapless singleton to slightly less than hapless mother, glugging all the vodka and making a meal of her love life along the way.
Production company Working Title confirmed the news and Zellweger's return to her signature role. Hugh Grant will reprise his role as Bridget's hilariously caddish one-time lover Daniel Cleaver and Emma Thompson will be reprising her role from the third film Bridget Jones's Baby (2016), which she also helped scribe. They will be joined by series newcomers Chiwetel Ejiofor, who appeared in Working Title's Love, Actually, and One Day star Leo Woodall.
No Colin Firth, though, as Mark Darcy? That seems odd given he was confirmed as the father of Bridget's baby in the third and most recent film.
The first Bridget Jones movie, Bridget Jones's Diary, was co-written by Richard Curtis and released in 2001 to critical and commercial success, securing an Oscar nomination for Zellweger. Sequel The Edge of Reason (2004), also co-written by Curtis, and Bridget Jones's Baby were commercial hits even if they couldn't compete with the original in terms of sheer popularity.
Where will Bridget's ever-so-relatable adventures take her next? Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy will be directed by Michael Morris and is set for release on Valentine's Day 2025.
