The day may have finally arrived when Captain America actor Chris Evans hangs up his shield for good.
The star of the Captain America and Avengers movies confirmed on Twitter that he has completed filming on Avengers 4 – reputedly set to be his final venture in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
It's been widely reported that the contracts for Evans, Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Hemsworth are coming to an end with the completion of Avengers 4. This has sent the internet into a frenzy regarding the film's ending – will some key Avengers personnel meet their maker as the franchise advances into its Phase 4 stage?
The finale of this year's Avengers: Infinity War culminated in plenty of death and destruction, although it remains to be seen whether any of it will be permanent. Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark/Iron Man was one of those who survived Thanos' (Josh Brolin) finger snap, which obliterated half of all life in the universe, with Evans' Steve Rogers/Captain America and Hemsworth’s Thor also surviving – for now.
Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, the climax of Avengers 4 has been subject to much speculation, with Hulk actor Mark Ruffalo indicating back in September that the ending still wasn't decided.
Whatever happens, Marvel's Phase 4 slate extends up to 2022, and will be incorporating some important new faces including Brie Larson's Captain Marvel. But all that aside, let's take a moment to return to Evans, and champion his role as the Captain.
Ever since 2011's gloriously retro Captain America: The First Avenger, Evans has brought upstanding dignity and warmth to a character often decried as one of the blandest in the MCU.
He deepened Rogers' persona to gripping effect in 2014's The Winter Soldier, embodying a patriotic figure out of step with the murky, opaque world of 21st century terrorism. And he's carried us through the ensuing battle between Rogers and Stark in the likes of 2016's Captain America: Civil War, showing how Rogers' idealism has left him more and more isolated amid the increasingly fractured Avengers.
If Avengers 4 is to be Evans' final turn as the character, it will be sad to see him go. The movie is released on 26th April 2019, so tweet us your favourite Captain America moments @Cineworld.
