James Gunn shares title treatment for The Suicide Squad

James Gunn is a rare breed of director who genuinely enjoys connecting with his fans. On social media, the Guardians of the Galaxy helmer frequently shares updates on his films, and his thoughts on the movie industry. True to form, Gunn has now revealed a first look at the title treatment for The Suicide Squad, his DC-focused reboot of the much-maligned 2016 movie. The surprise came as part of Gunn's birthday celebrations – check out the artwork below.

As you can see, Gunn is promising much more from the upcoming DC FanDome event, which promises all manner of revelations. It's described on the website as 'a mega, 24-hour immersive virtual experience, which brings the universe of DC to life and features the stars, filmmakers and creators behind its biggest films, TV series, games and comics'.

Due for release in August 2021, The Suicide Squad adds a definite article to the title, while subtracting many of the original cast members from the 2016 film. Still onboard: Margot Robbie's irreverent Harley Quinn, who recently led her own movie in the form of Birds of Prey. Robbie will be joined by the first movie's Viola Davis, Jai Courtney and Joel Kinnaman, plus franchise newcomers Idris Elba, Storm Reid, Nathan Fillion, Alice Braga, Peter Capaldi, John Cena and Taika Waititi. The cast members banded together to make a video to celebrate Gunn's birthday.

Is it a reboot? A sequel? A reboot-quel? It's hard to tell. Nevertheless, we're sure that Gunn's typically offbeat touch can inject the project with lots of fun personality. After the release of The Suicide Squad, he's set to hop back over to Marvel to make Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Gunn was initially fired from the project after obscene tweets were unearthed from several years ago, but he was later reinstated after much hectoring from cast members, including Dave Bautista.

With all the disruption from Gunn's initial sacking, and now the COVID-19 pandemic, it's anyone's guess when Guardians Vol. 3 will hit the big screen. It isn't part of Marvel's Phase Four slate, so our best chance is surely for a Phase Five release in 2022 at the earliest. Gunn has been forced to address rumours that the movie will be delayed even further, He insists that both the initial production date (believed to be February 2021) and the ultimate release date haven't changed. (Gunn isn't forthcoming on what the latter actually is.)
