National Theatre Live 2022: The Book of Dust – watch the first trailer

We're delighted to present you with the first trailer for The Book of Dust - La Belle Sauvage, the visually stunning new production from National Theatre Live 2022. A dazzling host of actors and technicians bring to life Philip Pullman's follow-up to his acclaimed His Dark Materials trilogy, and the production screens in Cineworld cinemas this February.

Here is the official synopsis: 'Set twelve years before his epic His Dark Materials trilogy, this gripping adaptation revisits Phillip Pullman's fantastical world in which waters are rising and storms are brewing. Two young people and their dæmons, with everything at stake, find themselves at the centre of a terrifying manhunt. In their care is a tiny child called Lyra Belacqua, and in that child lies the fate of the future. And as the waters rise around them, powerful adversaries conspire for mastery of Dust: salvation to some, the source of infinite corruption to others. Eighteen years after his groundbreaking production of His Dark Materials at the National Theatre, director Nicholas Hytner returns to Pullman’s parallel universe. Broadcast live from London’s Bridge Theatre.'

Following his imaginative live staging of His Dark Materials, renowned director Nicholas Hytner (The History Boys; The Madness of King George III) launches this vibrant adaptation of Pullman's text. The Guardian graced the stage show with a laudatory five-star review, describing it as "a theatrical marvel." The show makes breathtaking use of London's Bridge theatre to craft that elusive, captivating divide between fantasy and reality, aided by Bryony Lavery's sensitive translation of the source material.
