Neve Campbell confirmed to return in Scream 7

After dropping out of Scream 6 owing to salary disputes, Neve Campbell is confirmed as returning in Scream 7. The actress has been the lynchpin of the hit slasher franchise since its inception in 1996, playing the beleaguered Sidney Prescott who has survived multiple run-ins with the Ghostface killer.

In 2022, Campbell issued the following statement: “As a woman, I have had to work extremely hard in my career to establish my value, especially when it comes to Scream. I felt the offer that was presented to me did not equate to the value I have brought to the franchise.”

Campbell confirmed her franchise return via her Instagram page in which she praised the efforts of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillet who helmed the two most recent movies. (Both filmmakers are back this April with their grisly child vampire horror Abigail.)

Campbell's absence from the sixth Scream movie, released in 2023, was an adjustment and threw greater emphasis onto franchise newbies Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega. Both performers made their Scream debuts in the fifth movie, released in 2022. However, both have since dropped out of movie number seven along with the original director Christopher Landon.

Stepping into the fold is Kevin Williamson, the screenwriter who helped conceive the Scream franchise along with late filmmaker Wes Craven. Williamson, who wrote the first two movies in the series, is now set to direct Scream 7, making this his first directorial offering since 1999's black comedy Teaching Mrs Tingle.

Guy Busick, who wrote both Scream 5 and Scream 6, will take over writing duties from James Vanderbilt.

What surprises will be in store for the long-suffering Sidney in Scream 7? She's always harboured unsuspected connections to each of the Ghostface psychos, and we're wondering if her absence from the events of Scream 6 will be retrospectively worked into the storyline for the latest movie.

Will fellow franchise veteran Courteney Cox return as Gail Weathers? Will we see the younger cast members returning from Scream 5 and Scream 6? These questions will surely be answered when Scream 7 rolls cameras soon. Stay tuned for more details including the all-important release date.
