Scream 6 confirmed for release in 2023

Do you like scary movies? If you barely caught your breath after this year's Scream, then here's some news to get your heart racing. Scream 6 is confirmed for release on 31st March 2023 and will reunite us with a brand new Ghostface killer.

Prepare for an all-new discussion on the merits of so-called 'elevated horror' and 're-quels' as the various Woodsboro survivors face another masked maniac. Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett will be back as will the screenwriting duo of James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick.

Courteney Cox has stated that her battle-hardened character Gale Weathers will return in Scream 6, although that awaits official confirmation. It remains to be seen if franchise figurehead Neve Campbell, who portrays the haunted Sidney Prescott, will be back. Both Sidney and Gale lent some welcome gravitas to the fifth Scream movie, advising an imperilled generation of youngsters in the art of Ghostface survival.

Speaking of which, can we expect the return of sisterly survivors Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega? After dispatching the latest incarnations of Ghostface, they're now up to speed on the rules, although we can surely expect those to change again in the sixth movie.

Since its inception in 1996, under the auspices of the late director Wes Craven and screenwriter Kevin Williamson, Scream has asserted itself as a durable and hugely successful horror franchise. This year's movie, the fifth overall, became a sleeper pandemic hit with grosses of more than $140 million worldwide against a $20 million production budget.

The Scream series has delighted in milking its central premise, that of a film-literate killer and his equally media-savvy victims. The self-reflexive nature of the films draws on the conventions of horror with plenty of black humour and bloodshed. Given their success in helming the fifth movie, we anticipate what Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillet will come up with next.
