What can we expect from Patty Jenkins's Star Wars movie, Rogue Squadron? The original 1998 video game focused on Luke Skywalker's brave crew of X-Wing pilots as they faced down the evil Moff Kohl Seerdon on the planet of Mon Calamari. Fighting alongside Luke in the game was Wedge Antilles, played by Dennis Lawson in the original Star Wars movie trilogy.
Jenkins, however, has said that her movie won't be drawing on the video game storyline. She told IGN: "[In the Star Wars: Rogue Squadron movie] we're doing something original with great influence from the games and the books. There's a lot of things being acknowledged and understood about the greatness of all of those things, but yes, it's an original story and I'm so psyched to do it."
In short, we don't know what the storyline is. However, we do know that the script treatment is almost complete. Jenkins told Collider that a certain writer (who remains unnamed at this stage) is close to signing off on the initial Rogue Squadron draft.
Jenkins said: "I want [the writer] to have his own proper announcement, so I'm going to wait until that comes out, but we're very far into the, we're finishing the treatment basically, which is pretty big. So it ends up being like where you're fairly close to a screen, a well-along screenplay by the time I'm done with the treatment in my process. So yeah, we've been working on it for a while. It's going great. I'm super excited about it."
Jenkins has apparently already revealed the plot to Wonder Woman 1984 star Chris Pine. The Steve Trevor actor told Collider: "I had spoken to [Patty] about, not my involvement, but the story. She talked to me about it. It sounds really, really great. But I’m ecstatic for her, excited for what she’s about to embark on. If there’s anyone that can reimagine and breathe fresh, new life into it, it’s her."
Note how Pine consciously downplays his involvement in the project – reading between the lines, does this mean that he and Jenkins will potentially reunite for a Star Wars movie? If so, who would he be playing? The Rogue Squadron video game took place during and after the events of the initial Star Wars trilogy, so might he end up playing a new X-Wing character?
One imagines that the likes of Wedge Antilles and Biggs Darklighter (originally played by Garrick Hagon) will be featuring in the movie – they have to, right? After all, they're just two of the characters who served with Luke during the pivotal Death Star trench attack at the end of A New Hope. Whether this means de-ageing the actors, or re-casting the roles with younger stars (a la Alden Ehrenreich in Solo: A Star Wars Story), remains to be seen.
