The Batman: Dunkirk's Barry Keoghan has been cast

Chalk up another terrific addition to the cast of The Batman. Matt Reeves' DC superhero reboot has now recruited Dunkirk's Barry Keoghan, reports a DC FanDome press release.

Reports suggest that the talented Keoghan will be playing Stanley Merkel, the first partner of officer (and later commissioner) James Gordon. He's played in the movie by The Hunger Games and Casino Royale actor Jeffrey Wright.

Keoghan erupted onto the scene with not just his role in Dunkirk, but also his creepily unsettling turn in Yorgos Lanthimos' The Killing of a Sacred Deer. He was similarly volatile and compelling in recent Irish drama Calm With Horses. He's next set to appear in Marvel epic The Eternals opposite the likes of Angelina Jolie and Kumail Nanjiani.

Keoghan joins star Robert Pattinson, who plays Bruce Wayne, Andy Serkis (Alfred), Zoe Kravitz (Catwoman), Paul Dano (The Riddler) and Colin Farrell (The Penguin). It's a terrific ensemble for a promising movie that's set to begin production again in the UK this September.

The first trailer recently exploded online at the 2020 DCFandome event, and it promises a brooding Gothic thriller, guyliner and all. Pattinson's fledgling Bruce Wayne appears to be drawn into a murderous game, along with Jim Gordon, with Dano's psychotic Riddler. And an unrecognisable Farrell is thrown in there as well as The Penguin.

Fancy checking it out again? Watch the trailer below. The Batman is released on 1st October 2021. In the meantime, you can catch Pattinson in Christopher Nolan's lavishly staged Tenet, which is released in the UK and Ireland on 26th August.
