Highlights from our Cineworld 4DX-orcism screening of The Exorcist: Believer

If you're a horror fan, you'll know that immersion is key to being terrified. There's a particular kind of pleasure to being scared in the middle of a Cineworld screen amidst a congregation of fellow horror lovers – there's a communal feel of threat, leavened by the fact that one can walk out at the end having survived the ordeal.

We wanted to put hardcore horror viewers to the test, so we actioned a special 4DX-orcism screening of The Exorcist: Believer. (Don't forget, this is showing as part of our wider Horror Season.) The Halloween dream team of David Gordon Green and producer Jason Blum reboot the legacy of the notorious 1973 William Friedkin shocker, as two young girls find themselves possessed by pure evil.

Was it the perfect night for an exorcism? Scroll down to read our breakdown of events at the screening and then check out the full video at the end of this post. In the process, you'll discover you're compelled to make 4DX a key part of your next horror experience at Cineworld.

1. The screening was consecrated

One doesn't enter a screening of a new Exorcist movie lightly. Although Cineworld may be hallowed ground for movie-goers, one still has to take the relevant spiritual precautions.

For that reason, we called in a member of the 'clergy' to consecrate the screening and watch over the horror obsessives as they took in the brand new Exorcist chiller.

2. 4DX motion programming and effects brought the horror to life

4DX is a multi-sensory format that's unique to Cineworld cinemas in the UK and Ireland. And the format finds its true expression in the form of a horror movie like The Exorcist: Believer. After all, horror already evokes a palpable physical reaction of terror, and 4DX augments the sensation even further with its array of effects.

Our Exorcist audience was thrown around more than Regan MacNeil on a bed via the moving motion-programmed seats. Factor in the wind, water, rain and scents generated by 4DX, and it's little wonder they felt like they were in the middle of an actual exorcism. What more could die-hard Exorcist fans ask for?

3. Evil was warded off in the middle of the cinema

One can't have an Exorcist screening without a little bit of Satanic disruption, right? True to form, Old Scratch tried to plant one of his possessed minions in the midst of the 4DX audience. Fortunately, we had the tools in place to ward it off and restore everything to normal, sending viewers out on a high.
