Spine-tingling horror – Candyman and The Night House

You can sign up for a double-whammy of terror this coming bank holiday. Oscar-winning Get Out and Us filmmaker Jordan Peele unites with director Nia DaCosta for the Candyman sequel, in which the hook-handed serial killer once again rises from the grave to give us all a ghoulishly good time.

Alternatively, relish a superior Rebecca Hall performance in the psychological thriller The Night House, in which a recently widowed woman discovers disturbing things about her husband's past.

Heartwarming drama – Our Ladies

In the mood for something a bit more down-to-earth? The critically acclaimed Our Ladies is just the ticket, being the funny and poignant story of a group of Scottish Catholic schoolgirls painting the town red in 1990s Edinburgh. Expect a cracking soundtrack and plenty of wise insights on the nature of growing up.

Futuristic sci-fi – Reminiscence

Hugh Jackman plays a man addicted to the past in this visually ambitious sci-fi drama from Westworld creator Lisa Joy. He plays Nick, a man tasked with investigating people's memories who then becomes infatuated with a mystery woman (Rebecca Ferguson).

Feel-good fun – Free Guy

It's been a huge global box office hit, but if you haven't yet seen Free Guy, the Bank Holiday is your perfect chance. Ryan Reynolds gives a sweet-natured performance as a video game character who realises that the world he inhabits isn't real, setting in motion an adventure with equal parts pathos and excitement.

Riotous comic book action – The Suicide Squad

Fed up of superhero movies that play by the rules? Director James Gunn gleefully lets rip with his own take on The Suicide Squad, which pairs returning characters from the 2016 movie with a host of new faces. Expect gonzo gore, off-kilter humour and enough oddball characters for 12 films, including a returning Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn.

Martial arts mayhem – Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins

Henry Golding makes his big swing for stardom with this frenetic action-adventure, in which the titular operative Snake Eyes is schooled in the art of becoming a ninja warrior.

Side-splitting comedy – People Just Do Nothing: Big in Japan

The loveably idiotic Kurupt FM squad enjoy their big-screen debut, taking their brand of clueless humour to the land of the rising sun as they pursue an all-important record deal.
