Dune: Part Two is officially greenlit by Warner Bros

Dune: Part Two has been officially confirmed by Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures. We had an awful feeling that the first Dune instalment from director Denis Villeneuve would be left hanging in mid-air with no resolution. Fortunately, we'll be returning to Arrakis in 2023 to resolve the second half of the thrilling sci-fi saga, adapted from Frank Herbert's novel.

The onset of Dune: Part Two was conditional on Part One being a box office success. Theatrically, the movie has taken $223 million against its hefty $165 million budget, and that includes an impressive £5.8 million opening weekend in the UK. (Dune's success knocked James Bond movie No Time To Die from the top spot, reports Variety.) The movie's opening weekend box office in the USA and Canada was $41 million, outstripping analysts' expectations of a $20 to $30 million opening.

“I just received news from Legendary that we are officially moving forward with Dune: Part Two,” said Villeneuve. “It was a dream of mine to adapt Frank Herbert’s Dune, and I have the fans, the cast, and crew, Legendary and Warner Bros. to thank for supporting this dream. This is only the beginning.”

“Denis Villeneuve has crafted a film that is both visually extraordinary and emotionally transporting, as evidenced by its global success both critically and at the box office,” said Toby Emmerich, Chairman of Warner Bros Picture Group. “We are thrilled to continue on this journey with Denis and his cast and crew, and our partners at Legendary, and can’t wait to bring the next chapter of this epic tale to theaters in October 2023.”

The first Dune movie leaves us hanging with young Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) and his mother, Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson), about to be absorbed into the Fremen collective. House Atreides has been betrayed by vengeful House Harkonnen over the production of the invaluable Arrakis substance known as spice, which is capable of powering interstellar travel. This complex political intrigue, plus Paul's transformation into the prophesised messiah known as the 'kwisatz haderach', will fuel the narrative of Part Two.

As mentioned, Dune: Part Two will arrive on 20th October 2023. Can't wait to visit Arrakis again? Click here to book your tickets for Dune and tweet us your thoughts @Cineworld.
