Sex Education star Emma Mackey dazzles as the celebrated author Emily Brontë in the forthcoming drama, Emily. Lucky Cineworld Unlimited members get to watch the acclaimed period drama in advance of its release date this October.
Emily Brontë is forever immortalised as the short-lived but pioneering writer behind the tempestuous and timeless Wuthering Heights. However, Brontë's home life was just as dramatic and riven by tragedy as anything in her fiction, and this new movie brings her personal saga to the screen.
The movie is the directorial debut of noted actor Frances O'Connor. It examines Emily's relationships with her sisters Charlotte (Alexandra Dowling), author of Jane Eyre, and Anne (Amelia Gething), author of The Tenant of Wildfell Hall. There's also a focus on Branwell's relationship with her sickly brother Branwell (Fionn Whitehead), all the while as she pines for Weightman (Oliver Jackson-Cohen).
Put simply, this is catnip for fans of British period dramas as it exposes the intimate and private life behind one of the UK's most distinguished, if tragic, literary artists. Check out the trailer below.
Emily has been praised by critics. The Guardian's Radheyan Simonpillai lauds both O'Connor's direction and Mackey's performance, writing: "Emily is a sensitive and passionate portrait of the author. It’s also a confident directorial debut for O’Connor, a veteran actor who starred in Patricia Rozema’s Mansfield Park and the BBC’s Madame Bovary, and in turn makes a period piece stripped of the pageantry and stateliness typical of the genre.
"Hers is a more kinetic film, opting for handheld camera work and editing that follows the rhythms of Mackey’s ferocious performance closely."
