Greatest Days: everything you need to know about the Take That musical

Looking for some upbeat and warm-hearted summer uplift? Might we suggest Greatest Days, the official Take That musical, which puts a fresh spin on one of the biggest boy bands of all time. Prepare to lift the roof as you savour the Take That experience at Cineworld – scroll down for all the details.

It aims to do for Take That what Mamma Mia! did for Abba

Firstly, an announcement: Take That doesn't feature in Greatest Days. (That said, the lads are created as executive producers on the film.) Instead, the movie is an uplifting 'jukebox musical' in the blockbusting Mamma Mia! mold, getting the spirited cast to lip-sync to pre-existing Take That hits.

The movie follows five best friends who have the night of their lives seeing their favourite boy band in concert. Twenty-five years later their lives have changed in many different ways as they reunite for one more epic show by their beloved band, to relight their friendship and discover that maybe their greatest days are ahead of them.

It's got a fine British pedigree

The screenwriter of Greatest Days is Nigel Cole who landed a critical hit with 2003's uplifting comedy-drama Calendar Girls. The movie dramatised the creation of the Yorkshire Women's Institute nude calendar and sported a top-flight cast including Helen Mirren and Julie Walters, eventually receiving a hit stage adaptation.

The director of Greatest Days is Coky Giedroyc (sister of Mel) whose credits include the Caitlin Moran adaptation How to Build a Girl, starring Beanie Feldstein. The cast includes British comics Aisling Bea (This is Up) and Alice Lowe (Prevenge).

Critics have declared it to be a crowd-pleasing experience

Digital Spy describes the movie as "a wholesome celebration of friendship, tinged with heartbreak, that ultimately proves to be a crowd pleaser whether you like Take That or not as it's not really about them".

"What could have been a jukebox retread of some pop fluff here becomes a vibrant celebration of fandom’s sheer emotional transport," enthuses HeyUGuys. "It’s very funny, very British, a little weird and extremely satisfying."
